**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was brimming with anxiety, apprehension, and ambiguity about the future. I was on the verge of beginning my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, venturing into the unfamiliar was a formidable challenge. Now, looking back, I realize I’ve experienced a year rich with personal development, obstacles, and endless joyous moments. So, what insights has this transformative year imparted, and where do I find myself currently?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Friendships

One of the most daunting challenges I encountered at the beginning of university was building friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, it’s likely a concern for you as well. On my first day in student housing, a few days prior to the official start of term, I spent the entire day cloistered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet new people.

Fast forward to now, and I can assertively state that I’ve formed some of the greatest friendships of my life. My colleagues have become my second family, both within my program and throughout the university. It all initiated with brief interactions with others who were equally anxious.

What lesson did I derive from this experience? Take that bold step early. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be ample icebreaker activities and chances to engage with others. Above all, be authentic. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter individuals who align with your interests and values.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another important challenge was adapting to the workload and the increased complexity of the coursework. The transition from A-levels to university was prominent, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more daunting. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your abilities, particularly when observing others studying and wondering if you’re measuring up.

What assisted me in managing this? First, I reminded myself that everyone was facing similar challenges. If I was struggling with a concept, others likely were, too. The crucial step is to seek help—whether it’s from classmates or faculty. Learning to ask for support is one of the most beneficial skills you can cultivate during your first year.

### Connecting with Faculty

Speaking of seeking support, I cannot stress enough how encouraging the Materials Science faculty members are. They genuinely care about student success and are understanding of the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication with us, addressing our inquiries and providing advice.

Though I didn’t fully take advantage of the well-being support available until later in the year, I wish I had started earlier. Taking on the responsibility of a year well-being representative was one of the proactive steps I took at the beginning of the year. This role enabled me to forge strong connections with faculty members, which proved to be immensely valuable. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and doing so can greatly enrich your university experience. My suggestion? Leverage the support systems available—you can never receive too much assistance!

### Insights Gained

As I reflect on my inaugural year, I’ve come to understand that many of the anxieties I experienced—both prior to and during university—were unfounded. With the abundance of support from faculty and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. This year taught me how to balance pressures like exams and deadlines with opportunities for enjoyment and leisure.

Ultimately, university is as much a journey of personal maturation as it is an academic one. So, if you’re about to commence your own journey, embrace the obstacles, seek help when necessary, and remember to savor the experience.
