**Thoughts on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty as I prepared to start my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). For someone naturally shy and reserved, jumping into the unfamiliar felt quite frightening. Now, reflecting on an academic year filled with immense personal development, obstacles, and abundant enjoyment, I can assert that it has been a life-changing experience. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my situation now?

### Conquering the Fear of Building Friendships

One of the most daunting tasks I encountered was forming friendships. If you are a future student, this may rank as one of your primary concerns as well. On my initial day in student housing, just prior to the start of term, I spent countless hours sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself to my peers. Fast forward to the present, and I can proudly confirm that I’ve forged some of the most wonderful friendships of my life. The individuals I have encountered here have become like a second family to me, both at the university and in my program.

What facilitated this process? Taking that crucial first step forward. Even if you find yourself hesitant or uncomfortable initially, do not fret—numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet others await you. I also realized that the most beneficial approach is to simply be yourself. With such a vibrant community at Imperial, you will surely locate those who resonate with your interests and values.

### Addressing the Academic Obstacles

Another significant challenge I faced was adapting to the demands of the coursework and the elevated complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was profound, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities when observing peers studying and questioning if you’re lagging behind.

What helped me navigate those instances was the understanding that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you find it tough to comprehend a topic, likely, others are as well. The essential strategy is to reach out for assistance—whether from classmates or faculty members. This may be the most crucial lesson I internalized during my first year: don’t hesitate to ask for support.

### The Value of Supportive Faculty

In light of this support, the staff within the Materials department are exceptional. They sincerely desire for students to thrive and are understanding of the difficulties we face. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open, addressing our issues and providing guidance.

Although I didn’t fully leverage the available pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. Accepting the role of a year well-being representative was a bold move for me, yet it turned out to be one of my most rewarding choices. It enabled me to connect with faculty members, an experience that proved invaluable. Engaging with the staff, whether through formal positions or informal chats, is one of the finest things you can do for yourself. My recommendation? Utilize the support systems available—you can never have an excess of assistance!

### Insights Gained

This past year has shown me that the anxiety I experienced before and during my university experience was frequently baseless. With the extensive array of support resources provided by both faculty and fellow students, I learned that I was never truly isolated. More crucially, I managed to find a balance between the pressures of exams and deadlines while also relishing moments of joy and fun.

As I look back, I appreciate the distance I’ve traveled since those early uneasy days of October. My university experience has been one of growth, connection, and learning, and I eagerly await what the next chapter will bring.
