**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was brimming with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was on the brink of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, venturing into the unfamiliar felt daunting. Now, reflecting on a year of academic endeavors marked by personal development, challenges, and unforgettable experiences, I can unequivocally affirm it was a life-changing period. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current perspective?
### Conquering the Fear of Forming Connections
One of the most daunting aspects of commencing university was the prospect of making friends. If you’re a prospective student reading this, you may share the same feelings. On my inaugural day in student housing, just days prior to the term commencing, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, far too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I am pleased to report that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. The individuals I’ve encountered here have become akin to a second family.
What aided me? Taking that critical leap of faith. Even if you’re feeling unprepared or uncomfortable initially, don’t fret—there are plenty of icebreaker activities and opportunities to interact with others. I also discovered the value of being authentic. With the rich diversity present throughout the university, you’re sure to find people who resonate with your interests and values.
### Addressing Academic Hurdles
Adjusting to the demands and complexity of university coursework was another major obstacle. The transition from A-levels to university was striking, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s simple to feel overwhelmed or question your capabilities when witnessing others study and thrive.
What kept me centered was the understanding that everyone shares similar struggles. If you find a concept challenging, chances are that others are too. The key is to seek assistance—whether it’s from your classmates or teaching staff. Learning to seek help is arguably the most crucial skill you can cultivate in your first year.
### The Significance of Supportive Faculty
One of the most remarkable elements of my experience has been the exceptional support from the Materials Science faculty. They genuinely care about students’ success and are understanding of the challenges we encounter. Throughout the academic year, they fostered open lines of communication and were always willing to address our worries.
Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, I regret not reaching out sooner. Taking on the role of a well-being representative early on was another significant decision I made, and it turned out to be immensely rewarding. It allowed me to develop relationships with staff members, which proved invaluable. Whether through formal positions or informal encounters, getting acquainted with your lecturers and tutors is one of the best things you can do for yourself. My key takeaway? Utilize the support offered to you—you can never have too much assistance!
### Wisdom Gained
This year has shown me that the apprehension I felt—both prior to and during my university experience—was frequently unfounded. Thanks to the substantial support from faculty and peers, I came to realize that I was never genuinely alone. I also learned how to navigate the stress of exams and deadlines while still embracing moments of joy and fun.
Looking back, I recognize how far I’ve progressed since that anxious freshman who hesitated to exit their room. University has been a voyage of personal growth, and I eagerly anticipate what lies ahead.
