### Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering

*Written by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what the future held. I was on the brink of starting my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my introverted and reserved nature was used to. Now, reflecting on the past academic year, I recognize a journey rich with personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment. But what insights have I gained, and where am I today?

#### Conquering the Fear of Friendships

One of the most daunting obstacles I faced was forming friendships. For many, this is one of the most fearsome elements of beginning university, and if you’re a prospective student reading this, it might resonate with your own concerns. On my initial day in student housing, just days before classes commenced, I spent an entire day concealed in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others.

Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships of my life—friends who feel like family. It all began with casual conversations and finding common ground with others who were experiencing the same uncertainties.

So, what did I discover? Taking that bold step at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you aren’t ready or comfortable immediately, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreaker events and opportunities to socialize. Most importantly, be authentic. With such a diverse array of individuals in the program and university, you are bound to connect with those who resonate with your interests and values.

#### Facing Academic Difficulties

Another major challenge was adjusting to the workload and the complexity of the course material. The leap from A-levels to university was significant, and the transition from the first term to the second term felt even more profound. It’s easy to feel daunted or question your capabilities when you observe others studying and assume they have everything under control.

What assisted me in managing this was the understanding that everyone is facing similar challenges. If something doesn’t make sense to you, it’s likely that others are grappling with it too. The essential thing is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or faculty members. Developing the ability to ask for help is arguably the most crucial skill to acquire in your first year.

#### Assistance from the Faculty

On the topic of support, the staff in the Materials department are exceptional. They sincerely strive for students to succeed and are fully aware of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept communication lines open with us and demonstrated understanding for our difficulties.

I didn’t make full use of the pastoral support available until later in the year, and I wish I had capitalized on it sooner. At the outset of the year, I took a chance by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to cultivate relationships with faculty members, which proved invaluable. There are numerous ways to connect with staff, and engaging with them can greatly enhance your university experience. My most significant takeaway here is to seize the support available to you—there’s no such thing as excessive assistance!

#### Key Takeaways

Overall, this year has shown me that the anxiety I experienced before and during university was often unwarranted. With a wealth of support from both faculty and peers, I learned that I was never truly alone. I also figured out how to balance enjoying myself while handling the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines.

Reflecting on my journey, I’m proud of my progress. My first year in Materials Science and Engineering has been a tale of growth, resilience, and connection. To anyone about to embark on a similar journey, take the plunge, welcome the challenges, and remember—you can do this!
