**Reflections on My Initial Year Studying Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I felt an overwhelming mix of nervous excitement, anxiety, and uncertainty regarding my future. I was about to begin my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, leaping into such a major life change was quite daunting. Now, reflecting on a year of academic experiences filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment, I can appreciate the lessons I’ve picked up and the progress I’ve made.

### Conquering the Fear of Forming Friendships

A significant challenge I encountered at the beginning of university was forging friendships. If you’re an upcoming student, this may resonate with you as a primary concern as well. I recall my first day moving into my student residence. I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too fearful to emerge and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can assert with confidence that I’ve established some of the most remarkable friendships of my life.

The pivotal moment? Taking that initial step and engaging in casual conversations with fellow newcomers who were also feeling hesitant. Gradually, these exchanges evolved into deep friendships, and I now feel like I have a second family here at Imperial. My suggestion? Stay true to yourself. With such a varied community, you are sure to connect with individuals who share your passions and beliefs. And if you aren’t prepared to jump right in, no need to stress—there are numerous ice-breaking events and opportunities for interaction throughout the year.

### Addressing the Academic Shift

Adapting to the academic standards of university was another pressing challenge. The shift from A-level coursework to university assignments was significant, with the transition from the first term to the second being particularly intense. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities, especially when witnessing peers who appear to be thriving.

What facilitated my journey through this difficulty was the understanding that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re finding something hard to grasp, it’s likely that others are too. The essential strategy is to ask for assistance—whether from classmates or faculty members. Learning to request help is one of the most important skills you can acquire in your first year.

### The Role of Supportive Staff

On the topic of support, the faculty within the Materials department have been amazing. They are genuinely invested in the success of their students and are understanding of the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the academic year, they consistently kept lines of communication open and offered various types of emotional support.

I didn’t fully utilize this support until later in the year, and I regret not doing it earlier. One of the best choices I made was to serve as a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to forge connections with faculty members, which proved to be extremely beneficial. Whether through official roles or informal conversations, establishing rapport with your instructors and tutors can greatly enhance your experience. My key takeaway? Don’t hesitate to leverage the resources and assistance available to you—you can never have too much support.

### Insights Gained

This year has revealed to me that much of the apprehension I felt before and during university was often unnecessary. With the extensive support systems in place, including staff and fellow students, I’ve learned that I’m never truly alone. More significantly, I’ve figured out how to balance the pressures of exams and deadlines with enjoyable moments of respite.

Reflecting on my first year at Imperial, it has indeed been a life-changing experience. It’s been a journey of growth, perseverance, and connection, and I eagerly anticipate what the future holds.
