**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, apprehension, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was about to start my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who has always been introverted and quiet, jumping into the fast-paced world of university life felt quite intimidating. Reflecting now, I recognize a year that was transformative—full of personal development, obstacles, and many enjoyable moments. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Socializing

One of the most daunting challenges I encountered was forming friendships. For numerous incoming students, this is among the greatest concerns regarding beginning university. On my very first day in student housing, I was so anxious that I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too frightened to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can assert with confidence that I’ve made some of the finest friends I’ve ever known—friends who feel akin to a second family.

How did I arrive at this point? It began with small initiatives, such as engaging in light conversation with others who were experiencing similar feelings. I learned that taking an early leap, even if it feels awkward, is the most effective way to start forming bonds. If you don’t feel ready instantly, no need to fret—there are numerous icebreaker events and activities aimed at helping you meet new people. Most importantly, I discovered that being true to yourself is essential. With such an array of unique individuals at Imperial, you’re sure to find those who connect with you.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another major obstacle was adjusting to the academic workload and the heightened complexity of the course material. The transition from A-levels to university was clear, and the difference between the first term and the second was even more stark. Maintaining self-confidence in such a challenging atmosphere wasn’t always easy, especially when measuring myself against others. There were moments when I questioned my abilities.

What aided me during those tough times was the understanding that everyone was dealing with similar situations. If I struggled with a concept, it was likely that others were too. The most crucial lesson I took from my first year was the importance of asking for assistance. Whether from fellow students or faculty, seeking help is incredibly valuable.

### The Encouraging Faculty

On the subject of faculty, the Materials department at Imperial is outstanding. The lecturers and tutors genuinely strive for student success and are understanding of the hurdles we encounter. They keep communication open and are always prepared to address our issues.

Though I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support available until late in the year, I wish I had engaged with it sooner. Assuming the role of a year well-being representative was one of the first strides I took, granting me the opportunity to foster relationships with staff members. This turned out to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to connect with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university journey. My key takeaway? Make the most of the support systems available—you can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained

In retrospect, this year has shown me that the anxiety I experienced—both prior to starting university and through my first term—was largely unwarranted. With the extensive support provided by both staff and fellow students, those fears were manageable. I’ve recognized that I’m never truly alone and that it’s feasible to balance the stress of exams and deadlines with moments of happiness and satisfaction.

As I progress, I carry forward the lessons of self-assurance, the necessity of seeking help, and the importance of nurturing connections. My first year at Imperial has been a transformative journey, and I eagerly anticipate what the future holds.
