**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was engulfed in anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what awaited me. I was about to begin my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, jumping into the unfamiliar seemed daunting. Now, reflecting on the past year, I recognize it as a period of metamorphosis, challenges, and memorable experiences. So, what lessons has this year imparted, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Fear of Friendships

One of the most daunting challenges I encountered was establishing friendships. Initiating university life can be unsettling, and if you’re a future student reading this, you might share the same concern. On my first day in student housing, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I could have hoped for.

The secret? Taking that first step. Engaging in casual conversations with others who were equally apprehensive allowed me to forge connections that now feel like a second family. If you’re not ready to plunge in right away, don’t worry—there are numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet new people. The most crucial lesson I took away is to remain authentic. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter individuals who align with your interests and principles.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Adjusting to the academic demands and heightened complexity of university material was yet another major challenge. The leap from A-levels to university was significant, and the transition from the first to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel swamped or question your abilities when you observe others studying and apparently thriving.

What assisted me most was the realization that everyone shares the same struggles. If you’re grappling with understanding something, it’s likely that others are as well. The best tip I can offer is to seek help—whether it’s from classmates or the faculty. Learning to reach out for support is arguably the most crucial skill you can hone in your first year.

### The Value of Supportive Faculty

Speaking of assistance, the staff in the Materials department have been exceptional. They genuinely desire for students to prosper and are compassionate towards the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication with us, responding to our inquiries and providing direction.

Although I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support offered until the latter part of the year, I wish I had engaged earlier. Volunteering as a year well-being representative was a significant step for me, but it turned out to be one of my best choices. It enabled me to foster relationships with faculty members, which proved invaluable. Whether through formal roles or informal chats, getting acquainted with your professors and advisors is one of the wisest moves you can make. My biggest realization? Make the most of the assistance and resources available—you can never have too much help.

### Key Takeaways

Reflecting on this year, I’ve come to understand that the anxiety I experienced—both prior to starting university and during the year—was frequently unwarranted. With the extensive support from faculty and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. This experience has shown me how to balance the pressures of exams and deadlines with moments of happiness and enjoyment.

To anyone gearing up for university: take the plunge, face the obstacles, and don’t hesitate to lean on the support around you. You will grow beyond what you ever envisioned.
