**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, back in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about the future. I was preparing to start my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link), and the idea of venturing into the unknown was intimidating for someone like me—naturally shy and reserved. Now, reflecting on this past year, I recognize it as a period of significant personal development, challenges, and memorable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself now?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you may share similar concerns. On my first day in university housing, a few days prior to classes starting, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, petrified to venture out and introduce myself. Now, looking back, I can proudly say I’ve cultivated some of the greatest friendships of my life.
These connections didn’t materialize instantly, but they grew from small beginnings—casual chats with individuals who were equally anxious. With time, I discovered a second family at Imperial and learned a vital lesson: taking that first step is immensely rewarding. If you’re not quite ready to plunge in just yet, that’s perfectly fine. There are numerous icebreaker activities and chances to engage with others. Most importantly, just be yourself. With such a diverse student body, you’re certain to meet others who align with your interests and values.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Adapting to the academic workload and standards was another critical challenge. The transition from A-levels to university was palpable, and the difference between the first and second terms was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel overburdened or question your competencies when surrounded by ambitious peers.
What helped me the most was understanding that I wasn’t alone in my struggles. If I had difficulty grasping a concept, others likely faced similar challenges. The key takeaway? Never shy away from asking for assistance. Whether from peers or faculty members, seeking help is one of the most essential skills you can cultivate during your first year.
### Assistance from the Materials Department
On the topic of support, the staff in the Materials department are truly remarkable. They sincerely wish for students to thrive and are considerate of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open and were always eager to respond to our concerns.
Although I didn’t make full use of the pastoral support system until the latter part of the year, I wish I had accessed it earlier. At the outset, I took a bold step by becoming a year well-being representative, which enabled me to forge bonds with staff members. This turned out to be a brilliant choice, as establishing these connections significantly enriched my university experience. My recommendation? Make the most of the support systems at your disposal. Whether related to academics or personal matters, one can never have too much help.
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on the year, I’ve realized that the anxiety I experienced—both before and during university—was often unwarranted. With the abundant support from faculty and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. I discovered how to manage stress from exams and deadlines while also carving out time for fun and enjoyment.
Ultimately, my first year at Imperial has been a journey of growth, resilience, and connection. If you are about to commence your own university journey, remember that while challenges are to be expected, so are the opportunities to flourish and create enduring memories.
