**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and doubt about what awaited me. I was on the verge of beginning my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being someone who has traditionally been introverted, plunging into such a fresh experience was intimidating. Now, upon reflecting on the past academic year, I recognize it as a phase of tremendous personal development, obstacles, and a lot of joy. So, what have I discovered, and what is my current standing?
### Making Connections: A Challenging Yet Fulfilling Endeavor
One of the most fearsome parts of commencing university was establishing friendships. If you are a future student reading this, it’s probably something that’s weighing on your mind as well. On my first day of moving into my dormitory, mere days before classes commenced, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too frightened to venture out and introduce myself to anyone. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly assert that I’ve forged some of the most incredible friendships in my life. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and all it required was stepping beyond my comfort zone and engaging in casual conversations with people who were experiencing the same uncertainties.
So, what did I take away from this? I realized that making that crucial first move at the beginning of the year is vital. Even if you feel unprepared or uneasy, don’t stress—there will be ample ice-breaker functions and chances to bond with others. Most significantly, I discovered that authenticity is essential. With such a diverse group of individuals across the program and university, you are sure to find those who resonate with your personality.
### Navigating the Workload and Academic Demands
Another significant challenge was adapting to the academic workload and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a distinct increase in intensity from A-levels, and an even more substantial jump from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such a setting can disrupt your confidence, especially when noticing others diligently studying while you feel like you’re lagging behind. However, here’s the reality: everyone is experiencing similar feelings. If something isn’t clear to you, chances are others are just as puzzled. The most pivotal lesson I took from my first year was the importance of seeking assistance. Whether from your colleagues or faculty, never hesitate to ask for help.
### The Value of Faculty Support
On the subject of faculty, the teaching staff in the Materials department at Imperial is remarkable. They genuinely desire to see you succeed and comprehend the challenges students endure. Throughout the academic year, they maintained ongoing communication with us, addressing our issues and providing support. I didn’t fully utilise the pastoral assistance available until the latter part of the year, and I wish I had capitalized on it earlier.
At the beginning of the academic year, I made a bold move by stepping into the role of a well-being representative for my cohort. This position allowed me to build stronger relationships with the staff, which proved immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with the faculty, and it’s one of the most positive actions you can take for yourself. My primary takeaway from this experience is to fully embrace the support that is accessible to you. There’s no such thing as too much help!
### Concluding Thoughts: Facing Fears and Enjoying University Life
In conclusion, this year has taught me that many of the anxieties I felt before and during university were largely misplaced. With the extensive support available from both staff and fellow students, I quickly understood that I was never truly alone. I also learned how to juggle the enjoyment of university life with the unavoidable tension of exams and deadlines.
Reflecting on this past year, I take pride in the risks I undertook, the friendships I cultivated, and the knowledge I gained. If you are about to embark on your own university experience, remember: be true to yourself, don’t hesitate to seek help, and dare to take that initial leap.
