**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, apprehension, and uncertainty about the future. I was poised to begin my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had typically been quiet and reserved, plunging into the unfamiliar felt daunting. However, reflecting now, I recognize a year full of personal development, challenges, and plenty of enjoyment. So, what lessons did this year impart, and what is my current state?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends

One of the most intimidating challenges I encountered was forming friendships. If you’re a potential student perusing this, you might share similar concerns. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, just a few days before the term officially kicked off, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can assuredly state that I’ve formed some of the best friendships of my life. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and all it required was a bit of small talk with others who were equally anxious as me.

What did I discover? I found that taking the initiative at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker events and chances to connect with fellow students. Above all, I realized that being authentic is crucial. With such a diverse range of individuals across the course and university, you are likely to meet others who share your passions and beliefs.

### Addressing the Academic Load

Another considerable obstacle was acclimating to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. There was certainly a distinct transition from A-levels, and an even more substantial leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting can be challenging for your self-esteem. You may observe others studying and feel inadequate. But the reality is: everyone is navigating the same experience. If you’re finding it hard to grasp a concept, chances are, others are feeling the same way.

The most vital lesson I absorbed during my first year was the importance of seeking assistance. Be it from your classmates or the faculty, don’t hesitate to reach out. Everyone is here to lend a hand.

### Support from the Materials Department

Speaking of assistance, the staff within the Materials department are remarkable. They earnestly wish for your success and comprehend the obstacles students encounter. They maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year, addressing any concerns we might have. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until late in the year, but I wish I had earlier.

At the year’s onset, I took a bold step by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to connect with the staff, which proved invaluable. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty members, and it’s one of the best actions you can take for yourself. My primary takeaway? Embrace the assistance being extended to you. You can never have too much support!

### Concluding Thoughts

This year has enlightened me that the apprehension I experienced prior to and during university was often unfounded. With the extensive array of support services available from both faculty and peers, I was never isolated. I’ve learned to balance having fun with the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines.
