**Reflections on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and doubt regarding the journey that awaited me. I was on the verge of commencing my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who has always been introverted and reserved, plunging into this new experience was intimidating. Now, reflecting on the past academic year, I recognize it as a time of significant personal development, challenges, and plenty of enjoyment. But what lessons has this year imparted, and what is my current standing?
### Building Friendships: The Initial Major Challenge
One of the most daunting elements of commencing university was forging friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, it’s probably something weighing on your mind as well. On my first day settling into my accommodation, just days before classes started, I spent the entire time secluded in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly affirm that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever experienced. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, particularly among my course mates.
So, what have I gleaned? The essential step is to take that first courageous action. Even if you feel unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret—numerous ice-breaker events and chances to connect with people in similar situations will arise. Most crucially, remain authentic. With a diverse student body in both the course and university, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with you.
### Navigating the Workload and Academic Demands
Another major challenge was adapting to the workload and heightened intensity of the material. The transition from A-levels was definitely significant, and the leap from the first to the second term was strikingly marked. Being immersed in such a challenging environment can undermine your confidence, particularly when you observe others studying and feel as though you’re lagging behind.
What aided me in overcoming this was the reminder that everyone shares similar struggles. If a concept is proving difficult, I can almost assure you that others are having trouble as well. The most crucial lesson learned during my first year was the importance of seeking help—whether it be from classmates or faculty. Don’t shy away from reaching out when you require assistance.
### The Value of Supportive Faculty
On the topic of faculty, the staff in the Materials department are outstanding. They are genuinely invested in the success of their students and are aware of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained regular communication with us, addressing our concerns and providing much-needed support. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral resources until later in the year, but I wish I had leveraged them sooner.
At the beginning of the year, I boldly became a year well-being representative. This opportunity enabled me to engage with faculty members, which proved to be incredibly beneficial. There are various avenues to familiarize yourself with the faculty, and I highly encourage maximizing these resources. My main takeaway? Always utilize the support that’s offered to you. You can never have an excess of assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
In summary, this year has illustrated to me that the apprehension I felt before and during university was largely unfounded. The myriad support systems—from staff to fellow students—helped me navigate those emotions. I’ve learned that I’m never truly isolated on this journey, and I’ve discovered how to balance the enjoyment of university life with the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines.
