**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was about to begin my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has typically been reserved and introverted, the thought of plunging into this new experience was intimidating. Now, reflecting on my first academic year, I recognize it as a time of significant personal development, challenges, and lots of enjoyment. But what have I taken away from it, and where do I find myself now?

### Making Connections: Conquering the Initial Major Hurdle

One of the most anxiety-inducing challenges I encountered was forming friendships. If you’re a prospective student reading this, it might be a concern for you as well. On my very first day in student housing, a few days prior to the official start of classes, I spent the whole day retreating to my room, too nervous to venture out and introduce myself to others. Fast forward to the present, and I can proudly say I’ve developed some of the best friendships of my life. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, which commenced with casual conversations with peers who were facing the same challenges.

So, what insights did I gain? I realized that taking that initial leap of faith is always worthwhile. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease at first, don’t fret! There are lots of ice-breaker activities and chances to meet new faces. Most importantly, I discovered that being authentic is crucial. With such a diverse range of personalities across the course and university, you’re sure to find individuals who connect with you.

### Handling the Academic Demands

Another major challenge was adapting to the workload and the complexity of the material. There was definitely a noticeable increase from A-levels, and the transition from the first term to the second was even more significant. Being thrust into such an environment can sometimes undermine your confidence, especially upon seeing others studying diligently while you feel like you’re lagging behind. However, here’s the reality: everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you’re grappling with a concept, I can almost assure you that others are too. The key lesson I learned in my first year was to seek assistance. Whether from your classmates or the staff, don’t hesitate to ask for help.

### The Supportive Faculty: An Essential Resource

Speaking of the faculty, I cannot emphasize enough how incredible the professors in the Materials department are. They truly want each student to thrive and are fully aware of the hurdles students encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained consistent communication with us and were always open to addressing any concerns we had. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner.

At the beginning of the year, I took a bold step by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This opportunity allowed me to forge connections with the faculty, which proved invaluable. There are various avenues to cultivate relationships with staff, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My main takeaway from this aspect of university life is to seize the help and support available to you. There’s no such thing as too much!

### Concluding Thoughts: Embracing the Experience

In conclusion, this year has shown me that the apprehension I felt before and during university was often unfounded. With the extensive support provided by both staff and fellow students, I learned that I was never truly alone. More important, I figured out how to strike a balance between enjoying life and managing the unavoidable pressures of exams and deadlines.
