**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what awaited me. I was about to start my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being someone who has always been introverted and reserved, stepping into the unknown was well outside of my comfort zone. Now, reflecting back, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and plenty of enjoyment. But what exactly has this year imparted to me, and what is my current standing?
### Making Connections: The Initial Challenge
One of the most intimidating challenges I encountered was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you might share the same concern. On my first day moving into my accommodation, just a few days prior to the official beginning of the term, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, far too daunted to venture out and introduce myself to others. Fast forward to the present, I can assert with confidence that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever had, both in my program and throughout the university.
What did I glean from this experience? I came to realize that taking that initial step is vital. Even if you don’t feel completely prepared, don’t fret—there will be numerous ice-breaking events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, I discovered that being your authentic self is essential. With the variety of personalities and backgrounds present at university, you’re sure to find people who connect with you.
### Confronting the Workload
Another notable obstacle was acclimating to the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undeniably a significant leap from A-levels, and the shift from the first term to the second proved to be even more demanding. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or doubt your capabilities when you observe others engaged in their studies, but keep in mind, everyone experiences similar feelings. If something is unclear, it’s likely that others are facing the same challenges.
The most important lesson I learned in this regard was the significance of seeking assistance. Be it from your classmates or the academic faculty, don’t hesitate to reach out. This may be the most crucial skill to cultivate during your first year.
### Assistance from the Staff
On the topic of staff, the lecturers and tutors in the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely have a vested interest in your success and acknowledge the challenges faced by students. Throughout the year, they fostered open lines of communication with us, addressing our queries and providing support.
I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had done it much earlier. In the beginning, I took a bold step by becoming a year well-being representative, which enabled me to foster connections with the staff—a rewarding experience. There are numerous avenues to familiarize yourself with your lecturers and tutors, and I wholeheartedly recommend doing so. My most significant takeaway here is to fully utilize the support available. One can never receive too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
In summary, this year has taught me that the apprehension I felt prior to starting university—and even throughout the year—was often baseless. There are countless support networks available, ranging from staff to fellow students, ensuring you’re never genuinely alone. Most importantly, I’ve gained insight into balancing the enjoyment of university life with the unavoidable pressures of exams and deadlines.
