**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty concerning what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been shy and introverted, embarking on this new chapter felt quite intimidating. Now, reflecting on the past academic year, I can appreciate the personal growth I’ve experienced, the obstacles I’ve navigated, and the enjoyable moments I’ve had throughout. So, what exactly has this year imparted, and what position do I find myself in now?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most daunting challenges I encountered was forging friendships. If you’re a prospective student perusing this, it’s likely a concern you’re facing as well. On my first day moving into student accommodation, just prior to the start of the term, I spent the whole day retreating to my room, too anxious to step out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever known. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, all it took was some casual conversation with individuals who were just as apprehensive as me.

What insight did I gain from this experience? I learned that taking a courageous step at the start of the year is essential. If you’re not feeling prepared or at ease initially, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking events and chances to engage with others. Most importantly, be authentic. With such a diverse student community, you’re certain to encounter those who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Addressing the Academic Difficulties

Another considerable challenge was acclimatizing to the academic workload and the level of difficulty in the course material. There was certainly a clear increase in intensity compared to A-levels, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more demanding. Being in such a rigorous academic atmosphere can occasionally undermine your confidence, especially when you observe others studying and feel as if you’re falling short.

What assisted me through these periods of uncertainty was the realization that everyone is navigating similar waters. If something doesn’t make sense, chances are, others are grappling with it too. The most significant lesson I acquired in my first year was the importance of asking for assistance. Whether it’s from fellow students or faculty, don’t hesitate to reach out for support.

### The Value of Staff Support

Speaking of staff, I cannot stress enough how incredible the faculty within the Materials department is. They genuinely aspire for your success and are fully cognizant of the challenges faced by students. Throughout the year, they kept communication channels open, consistently checking in on our welfare. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until the year’s end, and I regret not doing so sooner.

At the beginning of the year, I took an initiative by becoming a wellness representative for my year. This position enabled me to foster better connections with the staff, which has proven to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with the faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My main takeaway here is to utilize the support available to you—you can never have too much assistance!

### Concluding Thoughts

In summary, this year has illuminated the fact that the apprehension I experienced before embarking on university, and even during my tenure here, was largely baseless. There are abundant support systems in place, from staff and fellow students alike, to help you navigate the trials of university life. I’ve realized that I’m never genuinely alone, and I’ve learned how to balance having fun with managing the unavoidable pressures of exams and deadlines.
