**Thoughts on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was engulfed in nervousness, anxiety, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was about to begin my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been introverted and quiet, venturing into the unknown was unfamiliar territory for me. Reflecting now, I recognize that this academic year has been filled with significant personal development, challenges, and plenty of enjoyable moments. But what precisely did I take away from this experience, and where do I stand now?
### Building Friendships: A Challenging Yet Fulfilling Endeavor
One of the most intimidating challenges I encountered was forming friendships. If you’re a future student reading this, you may share similar concerns. On my first day settling into student housing, just a few days before classes officially commenced, I spent the entire day retreating in my room, feeling too daunted to emerge and introduce myself to others. Fast forward to today, and I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, both within my program and throughout the university.
What was my takeaway from this? The crucial lesson was to take that first leap of faith. If you’re not prepared or feel uneasy at the start, that’s perfectly fine! Numerous ice-breaker activities and chances to meet peers will be available. And remember, if you can embody one thing, let it be your true self. With the diverse range of people at university, you’re sure to find others with shared interests and values.
### Managing the Workload: A Challenging Adjustment
Another major obstacle was acclimating to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. There was a definitive leap from A-levels, and the switch from the first term to the second was even more demanding. Being thrust into such an environment can occasionally unsettle your self-assurance, particularly when you observe others studying and feel inadequate.
What aided me throughout this process was the realization that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If something is unclear to you, the chances are high that others are grappling with the same concepts. The key insight here? Don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This is perhaps the most essential skill to cultivate during your first year. Reach out to your classmates and don’t shy away from asking faculty for support.
### Assistance from Faculty: An Essential Resource
On the topic of faculty, the professors in the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely care about your success and are acutely aware of the hurdles students encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained consistent communication with us, extending help and addressing our queries. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, and I wish I had done so earlier.
At the beginning of the academic year, I took a step forward by becoming a year well-being representative. This position provided me the chance to connect with faculty, which has proven invaluable. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty members, and doing so can greatly enrich your university experience. My recommendation? Fully embrace the support that is available. You can never have too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts: Cherishing the Journey
Reflecting on this year, I’ve come to understand that the anxiety I felt prior to starting university—and even throughout the year—was frequently misplaced. There is an abundance of support available, both from faculty and fellow students, ensuring you’re never genuinely alone. I’ve also discovered how to manage stress from exams and deadlines while also enjoying my university experience.
In summary, my inaugural year has been a voyage of growth, education, and connection. If you’re about to commence your university journey, remember that feeling nervous is entirely normal, but don’t allow that to prevent you from taking the plunge. You’ll be amazed at your personal growth and the enjoyment you’ll experience along the way.
