**Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I felt overwhelmed with nerves, fear, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my experience as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had traditionally been introverted and quiet, the notion of fully immersing myself in university life was intimidating. Now, reflecting on an academic year rich with personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment, I recognize just how much I’ve grown. So, what insights did this year provide, and what is my current standing?
### Forming Friendships: A Bold Step
One of the most anxiety-inducing trials I encountered was forging friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you might share the same feelings—it can be one of the most daunting parts of commencing university. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, just a few days before the term kicked off, I spent the entire day cloistered in my room, too anxious to engage with anyone. But now, I can confidently say that I have made some of the best friends I’ve ever known. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with fellow students who were navigating similar experiences.
What did I glean from this? It’s straightforward: take the initiative at the beginning of the year. If you don’t yet feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret—there will be numerous ice-breakers and activities to facilitate meeting new people. And most importantly, simply be yourself. With such a diverse community throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter individuals who share your passions and principles.
### Confronting the Academic Load
Another considerable obstacle was adapting to the academic demands and the complexity of the material. There was undeniably a significant transition from A-levels, and an even more substantial shift from the first to the second term. Being thrust into a demanding atmosphere can undermine your self-assurance. You may observe others hitting the books and feel inadequate. However, this perspective helped me: remembering that we all share similar challenges. If you struggle to grasp a concept, it’s likely that others are in the same boat. So, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance! This proved to be the most crucial lesson I absorbed in my first year—don’t shy away from seeking help from fellow students and faculty.
### Assistance from the Faculty
Speaking of faculty, the educators within the Materials department are outstanding. They sincerely wish for your success and comprehend the difficulties students encounter. Throughout the academic year, they regularly communicated with us, addressing our worries and extending support. I didn’t truly leverage the available pastoral care until the year’s conclusion, and I regret not doing so sooner.
At the beginning of the year, I took a courageous step by volunteering as a year well-being representative. This opportunity fostered a closer connection with the staff, which turned out to be invaluable. There are numerous routes to establish rapport with faculty, and this is one of the best things you can do for yourself. My main takeaway is to fully utilize the resources available to you—you can never have an excess of support!
### Closing Reflections
As I look back, this year has illuminated the fact that the anxiety I faced before and during university was mostly unwarranted. With the extensive support options provided by both faculty and fellow students, I came to understand that I was never genuinely alone. Most importantly, I learned how to strike a balance between enjoying my time and navigating the necessary pressures of exams and deadlines.
