**Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about the challenges that awaited me. I was about to begin my experience as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been bashful and introverted, immersing myself in this unfamiliar territory was not easy. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize a journey filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current perspective?
### Making Connections: The Initial Major Challenge
One of the most intimidating obstacles I encountered early in my journey was forming friendships. If you are a prospective student perusing this, it’s likely a concern on your mind as well. On my first day moving into my residence, just a few days before classes started, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself to others. Fast forward to the present, and I can say with confidence that I’ve connected with some of the best friends I’ve ever known. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it simply required me to step outside my comfort zone and engage in casual conversation with individuals who shared similar experiences.
So, what lesson did I take away? I realized that making that first move at the beginning of the year is essential. If you’re feeling uncertain or uneasy, don’t fret—there will be countless opportunities and ice-breaker events to meet new people. Most importantly, I discovered that being authentic is vital. With such a diverse array of personalities within the course and university, you’re sure to encounter others who resonate with you.
### Facing the Academic Demands
Another significant challenge was getting accustomed to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. There was a marked increase from A-levels, and an even steeper climb from the first to the second term. Being thrust into such a demanding environment can shake your confidence, especially when you notice others studying diligently and feel as though you’re lagging behind. But here’s the reality: everyone is facing similar challenges. If you find something confusing, others probably do too. The most crucial lesson I absorbed during my first year was the importance of seeking assistance—whether from classmates or faculty.
### Assistance from the Faculty
Regarding faculty, the support within the Materials department is exceptional. The instructors and tutors are genuinely invested in your success and recognize the difficulties students encounter. They maintain ongoing communication throughout the year, addressing our questions and concerns. I regret not utilizing the supportive services more thoroughly until the year’s end, and I wish I had done so earlier.
At the beginning of the year, I made a bold decision to become a year well-being representative. This role has enabled me to forge connections with faculty members, which has proven to be invaluable. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with the faculty, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for your well-being. My key takeaway? Take full advantage of the support that is accessible to you. You can never receive too much assistance!
### Concluding Reflections
All in all, this year has revealed to me that the apprehension I experienced before and during university was mostly unwarranted. There exist numerous support structures, from both staff and fellow students, designed to aid you in overcoming challenges. I have learned that I’m never truly alone, and I’ve figured out how to balance enjoying university life alongside the unavoidable stress of exams and deadlines.
