**Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, back in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a freshman. For someone who has always been introverted, plunging into such a significant change was intimidating. Now, as I reflect on the past academic year, I recognize a journey enriched with personal development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment. So, what insights has this year provided, and what is my current perspective?

### Making Connections: A Challenging yet Fulfilling Experience

One of the initial and most anxiety-inducing obstacles I encountered was forming friendships. This is a concern for many incoming students, and I was no different. On my first day of moving into my residence, just days before the term officially commenced, I spent the whole day confined to my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others. However, fast forward to now, and I can assert that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had, both within my course and around the university. It turns out that initiating simple conversations with others in similar situations made all the difference.

What did I take away from this? I learned that taking the plunge early in the year is always beneficial. If you feel unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret—numerous ice-breaker events and chances to connect with others will arise. Most importantly, I discovered that authenticity is crucial. With a diverse array of individuals at university, you’re sure to encounter those who align with your interests and principles.

### Confronting the Workload and Academic Demands

Another major challenge was adapting to the workload and the complexities of the course material. The transition from A-levels to university standards was significant, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more stark. Being thrust into such a demanding academic atmosphere can easily undermine your confidence, especially when you observe others studying and feel you’re lagging behind. However, I found that remembering we are all in similar situations was helpful. If something is unclear to you, chances are others are grappling with it too. The crucial lesson I learned during my freshman year was the importance of seeking assistance—be it from classmates or faculty.

### Assistance from the Faculty: Don’t Hesitate to Reach Out

On the topic of faculty, the support from the Materials department has been outstanding. The lecturers and tutors truly wish to see you thrive, and they recognize the various challenges students encounter. They routinely check in with us throughout the year, providing guidance and encouragement. I didn’t make full use of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had availed myself of it earlier.

At the beginning of the year, I took a bold step by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This position allowed me the chance to connect with the faculty in a more meaningful way, which was immensely valuable. There are numerous avenues to establish rapport with staff, and it’s one of the most beneficial actions you can take for yourself. My main takeaway here is to utilize the available support fully—there’s truly no such thing as too much assistance!

### Concluding Thoughts: Conquering Anxiety and Embracing University Life

In summary, this year has enlightened me to the fact that the apprehension I experienced before beginning university—and even throughout the year—was largely unwarranted. With the extensive support from both faculty and fellow students, those anxious feelings can be alleviated. I’ve realized that I’m never genuinely alone, and I’ve learned how to savor my experiences, even amidst the demands of exams and deadlines.
