**Contemplations on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with nerves, trepidation, and uncertainty regarding the journey ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my experience as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being inherently shy and introverted, plunging into this new phase of life was quite intimidating. Now, as I reflect on the academic year gone by, I recognize it as a time of significant personal development, challenges, and much enjoyment. But what insights has this year provided me, and what is my current standing?

### Forming Connections: The Initial Major Hurdle

One of the most daunting elements of starting university was the challenge of forging friendships. If you’re reading this as a prospective student, this could very well be a major worry for you too. On my first day arriving at my accommodation, a few days before classes officially kicked off, I spent the entire day secluded in my room, too anxious to step out and introduce myself to others. Fast forward to now, and I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I could hope for. Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, initiated by a few straightforward conversations with individuals who were experiencing similar feelings.

So, what have I taken away from this? I realized that making the initial leap at the year’s onset is always fruitful. If you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret—there will be numerous ice-breaker activities and chances to meet fellow students. Most crucially, I discovered that being authentic to yourself is essential. With such a varied student body throughout the course and university, you’re likely to meet those who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Navigating the Academic Workload and Challenges

A further considerable challenge I encountered was adapting to the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a clear increase from A-level studies, and the shift from the first term to the second posed even greater difficulties. Being immersed in such a demanding academic atmosphere can occasionally undermine your self-assurance. Witnessing others study hard might provoke feelings of inadequacy.

What aided me in surmounting this was the understanding that everyone is facing similar challenges. If you’re grappling with a concept, I can almost guarantee that others are too. The most valuable lesson I gleaned in my first year was the importance of seeking assistance. Whether from classmates or faculty, don’t hesitate to ask for support when you find yourself stuck.

### Assistance from the Faculty

On the subject of faculty, the backing from the Materials department has been exceptional. The instructors and tutors genuinely wish for your success and are aware of the difficulties students encounter. They keep in regular contact with us throughout the academic year, addressing any concerns we might have. One regret I hold is not utilizing the pastoral support resources earlier in the year. I only reached out towards the conclusion, but I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner.

At the year’s outset, I took a bold step by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This position enabled me to engage more with the staff, which has proven to be invaluable. There are numerous ways to forge connections with faculty, and it stands as one of the best decisions you can make for yourself. My primary takeaway from this experience is to fully leverage the support available to you. You can never receive too much assistance!

### Concluding Reflections

In retrospection, this year has enlightened me to realize that the nerves and concerns I harbored before entering university were largely unwarranted. With the extensive support provided by both staff and fellow students, I’ve come to learn that I’m never truly alone. Most importantly, I’ve figured out how to juggle the pressures of exams and deadlines while also enjoying myself and fully embracing university life.
