**Contemplating My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, apprehension, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was about to begin my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being naturally shy and introverted made the prospect of such a major life transition quite intimidating. Now, as I reflect on the past year, I recognize that it has been a period of considerable personal development, challenges, and memorable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I currently stand?
### Forming Friendships: A Challenging Yet Fulfilling Experience
One of the primary challenges I encountered early on was the task of making friends. If you’re a future student reading this, you might be experiencing similar concerns. On my first day moving into student housing, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can assert that I’ve developed some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and all it required was stepping out of my comfort zone and engaging in casual conversations with fellow students who were just as apprehensive.
So, what lessons did I take away from this? I realized that taking a proactive approach at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. Even if you feel unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret—there will be numerous ice-breaking activities and chances to connect with peers. Most importantly, I discovered that authenticity is essential. With such a diverse group of individuals across the course and university, you’re likely to find those who resonate with your interests and values.
### Confronting the Workload and Academic Pressures
Another major hurdle was acclimating to the rigorous workload and the complexity of the course material. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift from the first to the second term was even more significant. It’s natural to feel overwhelmed or question your capabilities when you observe others studying and appearing to thrive. However, one key insight that helped me during these times was the acknowledgment that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you’re grappling with a concept, it’s likely many others are too. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may have been the most crucial lesson I learned in my first year—reach out to your classmates and instructors when you require support.
### The Significance of Support from Faculty
Speaking of faculty, the lecturers and tutors in the Materials department are exceptional. They sincerely want you to succeed and are aware of the hurdles students encounter. Throughout the year, they consistently kept lines of communication open, addressing our issues and providing guidance. I didn’t fully take advantage of the available pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had sought it out earlier.
At the start of the year, I made the decision to become a year well-being representative. This role facilitated my connection with the staff, which has proven invaluable. There are numerous ways to forge relationships with faculty, and doing so can greatly enhance your university experience. My key takeaway? Utilize the assistance and support available to you—it exists for a purpose, and there’s no such thing as too much support.
### Concluding Thoughts: Conquering Apprehension and Embracing University Experiences
Reflecting on this year, I’ve come to understand that the anxiety I felt before starting university—and even throughout the year—was mostly unwarranted. With the plethora of support from both staff and fellow students, I faced challenges without ever feeling isolated. I’ve figured out how to manage the stress of exams and deadlines while also indulging in the enjoyable aspects of university life.
In conclusion, my first year at Imperial has been a transformative journey, brimming with personal growth, education, and friendships that I will treasure for many years to come.
