**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding my future. I was on the brink of starting my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a first-year student. For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, plunging into such a new experience was intimidating. Now, as I reflect on my first year, I recognize a path of personal development, hurdles, and a lot of enjoyment. But what has this year taught me, and what is my current situation?

### Building Friendships: The Initial Major Challenge

One of the most stressful obstacles I encountered was forming friendships. If you’re a future student reading this, it’s probably a concern you share. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, just days before classes began, I spent the entire day cooped up in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to today, and I can proudly state that I’ve made some of the best friends I’ve ever had. Here at Imperial, I’ve cultivated a second family, all starting with casual conversations and connecting with others who were in a similar situation.

So, what did I discover? I discovered that it’s crucial to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, that’s perfectly fine! There will be numerous ice-breakers and events created to help you meet new people. Most importantly, I realized that being genuine is essential. With such a diverse group of individuals across the course and the university, you’re certain to find those who relate to you.

### Confronting the Workload and Content Challenges

Another challenge I had to face was the workload and the heightened difficulty of the material. There was certainly a significant shift from A-levels, and an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can shake your confidence, especially when you observe others studying and feel like you’re lagging behind. But here’s the reality: everyone is in a similar situation. If something isn’t clear to you, odds are others are struggling with it too. The most vital lesson I learned in my first year was to seek assistance. Whether from your classmates or faculty, don’t hesitate to ask for help.

### The Supportive Faculty

Speaking of faculty, I can’t stress enough how wonderful the Materials department is. The staff genuinely care about your success and are fully aware of the challenges students encounter. They sympathize with us and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year to address any issues. While I didn’t fully appreciate the pastoral support until the end of the year, I wish I had utilized it earlier.

At the beginning of the year, I took a step forward by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position allowed me to connect with staff members, which has been tremendously beneficial. There are many ways to interact with faculty, and it’s one of the best things you can do for your own benefit. My biggest takeaway? Make the most of the available support. You can never have too much assistance!

### Concluding Thoughts

In conclusion, this year has demonstrated to me that the apprehension I felt prior to and during university was mostly unfounded. There are numerous support options accessible, from both faculty and fellow students, to guide you through any difficulties. I’ve learned that I’m never truly alone, and I’ve figured out how to enjoy myself while managing the inevitable anxieties of exams and deadlines.
