**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lied ahead. I was on the brink of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For an individual who had always been somewhat introverted, fully engaging in university life felt like an intimidating challenge. However, reflecting on the past academic year, I recognize it as a time of significant personal development, obstacles, and enjoyable experiences. So, what exactly have I gained from this experience, and where do I stand now?

### Forming Connections: Conquering the Initial Challenge

One of the most anxiety-inducing trials I encountered was the task of making friends. If you’re a potential student reading this, it’s likely a concern you share as well. I can recall my first day moving into university housing—just a few days ahead of the semester starting. I spent that whole day cloistered in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others.

Fast forward to now, and I can assert with confidence that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, which commenced with casual conversations with others facing similar circumstances. What key takeaway did I gain? I realized that taking the initiative at the beginning of the year is always rewarding. If you aren’t quite ready or feel uneasy, fear not—there are ample ice-breaker events and chances to connect with people. Above all, I discovered that authenticity is crucial. With such a varied mix of individuals throughout the program and university, you are certain to encounter others who resonate with your interests and values.

### Managing the Academic Load: An Intense Learning Experience

Another significant challenge was adapting to the academic workload and the complexity of the material. The demands were noticeably higher than A-levels, and the leap from the first term to the second was even more significant. Being thrust into this setting can be challenging for your confidence, particularly when you observe others studying and feel as though you’re lagging behind.

A invaluable realization that aided me during this period was understanding that everyone shares similar experiences. If you struggle with a concept, chances are, there are others equally perplexed. Thus, do not hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the single most important insight I garnered during my first year—reach out to both your peers and the faculty when you require help.

### Assistance from Faculty: Embrace the Help Available

On the topic of faculty, the backing from the Materials department has been remarkable. The lecturers and tutors genuinely desire for you to excel, and they recognize the difficulties students encounter. They maintain open lines of dialogue year-round and are always ready to address student issues.

I didn’t make the most of the pastoral assistance available until late in the year, and I regret not having done so earlier. At the start of the year, I took a bold step by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort, which enabled me to connect with the staff more closely. Cultivating these relationships has proven invaluable, and I encourage anyone commencing their university journey to utilize the available support systems. You can never receive too much support!

### Concluding Reflections: Welcoming the Adventure

In conclusion, this year has taught me that the apprehension I felt prior to starting university—and during the journey itself—was largely misplaced. Numerous support avenues exist, whether through faculty or fellow students, to assist you in overcoming challenges. I’ve come to understand that I am never truly alone, and I’ve learned how to juggle enjoying university life along with the unavoidable pressures of exams and deadlines.
