**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was engulfed in anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the upcoming journey. I was on the brink of beginning my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, venturing into the unfamiliar felt daunting. Now, as I reflect on the last academic year, I perceive it as a time of significant personal development, various challenges, and plenty of enjoyable moments. But what specific lessons emerged from this year, and where do I currently find myself?

### Making Connections: The Initial Major Hurdle

One of the most intimidating elements of commencing university was the task of making new friends. If you’re a prospective student perusing this, it’s probably a concern you share as well. On my first day of moving into my residence, mere days ahead of the term’s start, I found myself spending the whole day sequestered in my room, feeling too daunted to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can assuredly say that I’ve formed friendships that are among the most cherished I’ve ever had. At Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, particularly within my course. It all began with light conversations and connecting with individuals in comparable situations.

So, what did I take away from this experience? I realized that taking initiative at the onset of the year is always beneficial. Even if you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be a multitude of ice-breaker activities and chances to interact with others. Most importantly, I discovered that authenticity is critical. With such a varied group of individuals throughout the course and university, you are sure to find those who connect with you.

### Confronting the Workload and Academic Demands

Another significant hurdle was adapting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. There was undeniably a noticeable shift from A-levels, and the transition from the first term to the second felt even more substantial. Being immersed in such a rigorous academic setting can sometimes undermine your self-assurance, especially when observing others studying and feeling like you’re falling short.

What assisted me in navigating those moments of uncertainty was the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re struggling to comprehend something, chances are, you’re not the only one. There are undoubtedly others grappling with the same topics. The most valuable lesson I drew from my first year was the importance of seeking assistance. Whether you turn to your peers or the teaching staff, don’t hesitate to ask for help.

### The Significance of Staff Support

Speaking of staff, the backing from the Materials department has been remarkable. The lecturers and tutors genuinely care about your success and comprehend the obstacles students encounter. They maintain consistent communication with us throughout the year, addressing our concerns and providing guidance. I didn’t fully tap into the pastoral support available until late in the year, but I wish I had availed myself of it earlier.

At the beginning of the year, I took a chance by stepping into the role of a well-being representative for my year group. This position enabled me to establish a better rapport with the staff, which has proven invaluable. There are numerous avenues to foster relationships with the staff, and it’s one of the most beneficial actions you can take for yourself throughout your university experience. My key takeaway? Make the most of the support being extended to you. You can never have too much assistance!

### Concluding Thoughts

Overall, this year has revealed to me that the apprehension I experienced prior to and during university was largely unfounded. With the plethora of support available from both staff and fellow students, those feelings can be effectively managed. I’ve learned that I am never genuinely alone, and I’ve uncovered how to balance enjoying myself amidst the unavoidable stress of exams and deadlines.
