**Musings on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehensions, and doubts regarding what lay ahead. I was on the brink of commencing my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being inherently shy and withdrawn, stepping into the unfamiliar was a challenge outside my comfort zone. Now, reflecting on the past academic year, I recognize a time of significant personal development, obstacles, and abundant enjoyment. But what precisely have I learned, and what is my current position?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Socializing
One of the most intimidating hurdles I confronted early on was forging friendships. If you’re a prospective student browsing this, you might share the same concern. On my inaugural day settling into student housing, just days prior to the semester kick-off, I spent the entirety of that day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself to others. Fast forward to today, and with confidence, I can proclaim that I’ve made some of the most incredible friends I’ve ever known. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others in similar situations.
So, what did I glean? I realized that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always worthwhile. If you’re not fully prepared or at ease, that’s perfectly fine! Numerous ice-breaker activities and opportunities abound for meeting new people. Most importantly, I discovered that being your authentic self is essential. With such a diverse array of individuals in the course and university, you are sure to encounter those who connect with you.
### Handling the Academic Load
Another considerable challenge was adapting to the academic demands and the escalated complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a marked increase from A-levels, and an even more substantial jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting can sometimes undermine your self-confidence, particularly when you observe others studying and feel like you’re lagging behind. But here’s the reality: everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you find something confusing, it’s likely that others are equally perplexed.
The most critical lesson I absorbed during my first year was the importance of seeking assistance. Whether from peers or faculty, don’t be reluctant to ask for help. This straightforward action can tremendously impact your experience.
### The Value of Support from Faculty
Regarding faculty, I cannot stress enough how wonderful the staff in the Materials department are. They sincerely wish for your success and recognize that students encounter challenges. Throughout the year, they kept in regular contact with us, addressing our issues and providing assistance. Although I didn’t fully tap into the available pastoral support until late in the year, I wish I had seized that opportunity earlier.
At the year’s onset, I took a courageous step by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to better connect with the staff, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are innumerable ways to foster relationships with faculty, and cultivating these connections is one of the smartest moves you can make for yourself. My primary lesson from this experience is to utilize the support offered—you can never have too much help!
### Concluding Reflections
As I reflect on this year, I’ve come to understand that the apprehension I felt before and during university was mostly unfounded. Numerous support structures exist, from faculty to fellow students, that can help alleviate those nerves. I’ve also realized that I’m never genuinely alone, and it’s entirely possible to relish university life even amid the stress of exams and deadlines.
