**Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of beginning my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Having always been timid and reserved, plunging into this new experience felt formidable. Now, as I reflect on the past academic year, I recognize a time of substantial personal development, challenges, and plenty of enjoyment. But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?
### Forming Friendships: The Initial Major Hurdle
One of the most daunting aspects of entering university was the prospect of developing friendships. If you’re a future student reading this, it may be a concern for you too. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, a few days before the term kicked off, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had here at Imperial. I’ve discovered a second family, both within my course and throughout the university.
The breakthrough? It began with light conversation with others who were in a similar situation. What I’ve realized is that taking that first step is essential. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease immediately, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker events and chances to meet others. And above all, just be yourself. With such a diverse range of individuals at university, you are sure to encounter those who resonate with your interests and values.
### Managing the Workload
Another major hurdle was adapting to the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a leap from A-levels, and the transition from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated and question your capabilities, particularly when observing others studying and seemingly mastering everything with ease. But here’s what helped me: recalling that everyone shares similar experiences. If you struggle to grasp a concept, chances are, others do too.
The most crucial lesson I absorbed in my first year was the importance of seeking assistance. Whether from fellow students or faculty, don’t hesitate to ask for help. Everyone is there to provide support, and asking for help reflects strength, not weakness.
### Assistance from the Faculty
Speaking of support, the staff within the Materials department are remarkable. They genuinely want you to succeed and are well aware of the challenges students encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained regular communication with us, addressing our worries and offering guidance. Although I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner.
At the beginning of the year, I took a bold step by serving as a well-being representative for my cohort. This position allowed me to familiarize myself with the staff better, which has been invaluable. There are numerous ways to foster relationships with the faculty, and I highly recommend pursuing this. My most significant takeaway from this experience is to capitalize on the available support. You can never have too much assistance!
### Concluding Remarks
In summary, this year has illustrated to me that the anxiety I experienced before entering university—and even throughout the year—was often unwarranted. There are countless support systems in place, from both staff and fellow students, to help you tackle the challenges. I’ve learned that I’m never truly on my own, and I’ve figured out how to strike a balance between enjoying myself and handling the inevitable pressure of exams and deadlines.
