**Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*Written by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was engulfed in nerves, trepidation, and uncertainty about the road ahead. I was set to begin my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a first-year student at Imperial College London. For an individual who had always been quiet and reserved, plunging into university life seemed overwhelming. Now, as I reflect on an academic year brimming with personal development, hurdles, and abundant enjoyment, I can’t help but contemplate what this year has imparted to me and where I find myself today.

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most anxiety-inducing obstacles I encountered was establishing friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you may be experiencing similar apprehension. On my initial day moving into my accommodation, just days before the term kicked off, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too daunted to venture out and greet others. Fast forward to now, and I can assertively say that I’ve cultivated some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced. Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, and all it took was a sprinkle of small talk with individuals facing the same circumstances as myself.

So, what did I discover? I learned that taking that first leap at the onset of the year is always worthwhile. If you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret—there will be numerous ice-breaker events and chances to connect with fellow students. Most importantly, I realized that being authentic is essential. With the diverse array of people across the course and the university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.

### Managing the Academic Demands

Another considerable challenge was acclimating to the workload and the complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels was quite noticeable, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more distinct. Being thrust into this new academic setting can occasionally shake your confidence, particularly when you see peers studying and begin to question your own capabilities. However, one aspect that propelled me forward was the understanding that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you find something puzzling, it’s likely that others share your confusion. The most vital lesson I picked up in my first year was the importance of seeking assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. Reaching out when you require support is vital.

### Assistance from the Faculty

Speaking of faculty, the instructors in the Materials department are exceptional. They are genuinely invested in your success and acknowledge the difficulties students face. Throughout the year, they kept the lines of communication open regarding any challenges we encountered. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, but reflecting on it, I wish I had embraced it sooner.

At the beginning of the year, I made a bold move by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to connect more deeply with the staff, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university journey. My key takeaway is to fully utilize the support available to you—whether academic or pastoral. You can never have too much assistance!

### Closing Thoughts

In summary, this year has made me realize that the apprehension I felt before and during university was largely baseless. With a broad spectrum of support options from both faculty and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. I have learned to balance the pressures of exams and deadlines with enjoyment, and I have grown increasingly confident in myself throughout this journey.
