**Musings on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and apprehension about the journey ahead. I was on the verge of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Having always been a bit shy and reserved, the thought of plunging into this new experience felt intimidating. Now, reflecting on the academic year, I recognize a time of significant personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?
### Forming Connections: The Initial Major Hurdle
One of the most daunting challenges of beginning university was establishing friendships. If you’re a potential student reading this, it’s probably a concern of yours as well. On my first day moving into my residence, just a few days before classes started, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too nervous to go out and mingle with others. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly proclaim that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships of my life. Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, beginning with casual conversations with people who were just as anxious as I.
So, what did I gain from this experience? I discovered that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. Even if you feel unprepared or uneasy, there will be numerous ice-breakers and activities designed to facilitate connections with others. Most importantly, I learned that authenticity is essential. Among the diverse student body and community, you are sure to find those who align with your values.
### Confronting the Academic Load and Challenges
Another substantial challenge was adapting to the academic workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels was significant, with an even more considerable leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting can undermine your confidence, particularly when you observe others studying intensely and feel as though you’re lagging. However, here’s the reality: everyone is navigating the same difficulties. If something is unclear to you, it’s likely that others are grappling with it as well.
The key lesson I took away from my first year was the importance of seeking help. Whether it’s from classmates or faculty, reaching out for assistance is vital. Don’t shy away from asking for support when you’re struggling—it’s a skill that will benefit you greatly during your time at university.
### The Value of Support from Faculty
On the topic of faculty, the professors in the Materials department are outstanding. They truly care about student success and are aware of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, there was a consistent dialogue between staff and students, addressing any concerns we had. Although I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral care available until the year’s end, I wish I had embraced it sooner.
At the year’s start, I took a brave step by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This position allowed me to cultivate connections with faculty members, which turned out to be incredibly beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to connect with the staff, and it’s one of the most valuable actions you can take for yourself. My primary takeaway? Utilize the support available to you—there’s no such thing as too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
In summary, this year has shown me that the anxiety I experienced before and during university was mostly unwarranted. There are myriad support systems available, from faculty to fellow students, ready to assist you in overcoming challenges. I’ve realized I’m never alone and that it is entirely possible to relish university life, even amid the demands of exams and deadlines.
