**Thoughts on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and doubt regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Having always been somewhat introverted, plunging into this fresh chapter seemed intimidating. Now, as I reflect on the academic year, I recognize it as a time of significant personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current perspective?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Building Friendships
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered was the challenge of making new friends. If you’re a potential student reading this, you might share similar feelings. On my initial day settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to the term’s commencement, I spent the whole day cooped up in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever had. I’ve established a second family here at Imperial, all of which began with casual conversations with others who were experiencing the same uncertainties.
So, what have I discovered? The paramount lesson was to take that bold step at the year’s inception. If you’re unsure or don’t feel at ease initially, that’s perfectly fine! Numerous ice-breaker events and chances to meet others will arise. And keep in mind, if you can embody one thing, let it be your true self. With such a diverse mix of personalities in the course and university, you’re likely to find individuals who connect with you.
### Navigating the Academic Demands
Another major challenge was adjusting to the academic demands and the complexity of the subject matter. There was undoubtedly a noticeable increase in difficulty from A-levels, with an even more significant leap from the first term to the second. Being placed in such a setting can sometimes undermine your confidence, especially when observing others studying and feeling as though you’re not keeping pace.
What guided me through this was the realization that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you encounter something you don’t grasp, it’s likely that others are struggling as well. The crucial takeaway here is to seek assistance. This might be the most vital skill to cultivate in your first year—don’t hesitate to reach out to your peers and faculty when you require support.
### Assistance from the Faculty
Speaking of faculty, the support from the Materials department has been outstanding. The lecturers and tutors truly desire for you to excel and recognize the difficulties students contend with. They keep in regular contact with us throughout the year, addressing any issues we might experience. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until the year’s conclusion, but I wish I had done so earlier.
At the beginning of the year, I took a step forward by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to become better acquainted with the staff, which proved to be invaluable. There are numerous opportunities to connect with the faculty, and engaging with them is one of the best decisions you can make for yourself. My primary lesson from this? Don’t hold back from utilizing the support available to you. There’s no such thing as too much help!
### Concluding Thoughts
In summary, this year has shown me that the apprehension I felt before and during university was largely unwarranted. Numerous support resources are accessible, from both staff and fellow students, to alleviate those concerns. I’ve discovered that I’m never genuinely alone, and I have learned how to enjoy university life while managing the unavoidable pressures of exams and deadlines.
