**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Written by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Having always been introverted and quiet, the idea of immersing myself in this new phase was quite intimidating. However, reflecting on the past academic year, I recognize it as a time of significant personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained from this journey, and what is my current position?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends
One of the most daunting challenges I encountered upon starting university was forging friendships. If you’re a prospective student reading this, it’s likely one of your greatest concerns as well. On my first day settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to the formal start of the term, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too fearful to step out and meet new people. Fast-forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever known. I’ve created a second family here at Imperial, and it all initiated with a few straightforward conversations with individuals who shared similar experiences.
What did this teach me? The most crucial lesson is that it’s always worthwhile to take that initial step. Even if you don’t feel prepared or at ease, that’s okay! There will be an abundance of ice-breaker events and chances to connect with others. And the most vital aspect? Just be yourself. With such a diverse array of individuals throughout the course and the university, you’re guaranteed to meet those who align with your interests and values.
### Navigating the Academic Demands
Another major challenge was getting accustomed to the academic workload and the heightened complexity of the material. There was certainly a noticeable leap from A-levels, and the transition from the first term to the second proved to be even more demanding. Being immersed in this setting can sometimes undermine your confidence, especially when you observe others studying and feel like you’re lagging behind. But here’s the crux: everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you’re grappling with a concept, it’s likely others are, too. The key is to seek assistance. This is arguably the most vital lesson I learned in my first year—do not hesitate to ask for guidance from your classmates and faculty.
### The Value of Staff Support
Speaking of the faculty, I cannot stress enough how outstanding the Materials department is. The staff truly want you to succeed, and they comprehend the hurdles that students encounter. They maintain communication with us, addressing our concerns and providing support. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral care available until late in the year, but I wish I had done it sooner.
At the beginning of the year, I took a leap by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This position facilitated my connection with the staff members, which has proven to be extremely beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to foster relationships with the faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My main takeaway is to fully utilize the assistance and support that is provided—you can never have too much!
### Concluding Thoughts
To summarize, this year has shown me that the anxiety I experienced before and during university was mostly unjustified. There are ample support systems in place, from staff to fellow students, that can help alleviate those worries. I’ve come to understand that I am never alone in this journey, and I’ve learned how to strike a balance between enjoying life and managing the unavoidable pressures of exams and deadlines.
