**Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty about the path ahead. I was about to initiate my experience as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Having always been introverted and cautious, plunging into university life felt like a formidable venture. Reflecting on the academic year that has passed, I now perceive a time rich in personal development, trials, and a significant amount of enjoyment. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

### Building Friendships: Conquering the Initial Challenge

One of the most daunting hurdles I encountered was forging friendships. If you are an incoming student reading this, you might share similar feelings of unease. On my first day settling into my accommodation, just before the semester commenced, I spent an entire day sequestered in my room, too fearful to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly declare that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships of my life. Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, beginning with casual conversations among others who were experiencing similar sentiments.

So, what have I gleaned? I came to understand that taking a bold step right from the beginning of the year is essential. If you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! Numerous ice-breaker activities and chances to connect with others will arise. Most importantly, I discovered that being authentic is paramount. With such a diverse group of individuals throughout the course and university, you are sure to encounter those who align with your interests and principles.

### Managing the Workload: A Challenging Learning Curve

Another major challenge was adapting to the workload and the complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels was palpable, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more intense. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or doubt your capabilities when observing others studying. Nevertheless, one factor that enabled me to persevere was the reassurance that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If there’s something you don’t grasp, it’s likely that others are having difficulties as well. So, don’t be afraid to seek assistance. This may be the most significant lesson I acquired during my first year—reach out to your classmates and faculty when you need support.

### Staff Support: An Invaluable Asset

On the topic of staff, the backing from the Materials department has been remarkable. The lecturers and tutors are sincerely invested in student success and comprehend the obstacles we face. They foster open dialogue throughout the year, addressing any issues that arise. Although I didn’t fully capitalize on the pastoral support until the year’s end, I regret not doing so sooner.

At the year’s onset, I took a step forward by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This position granted me the chance to better connect with the staff, which turned out to be an invaluable opportunity. There are numerous ways to cultivate relationships with faculty, and I strongly recommend pursuing this. My primary takeaway from this facet of university life is to utilize the support offered to you. You can never have too much assistance!

### Concluding Reflections: Development and Self-Assurance

In summary, this year has illuminated for me that the apprehension I experienced before commencing university—and even throughout the year—was often unfounded. There exists an abundance of support, both from faculty and fellow students, to assist you in overcoming any challenges. I’ve realized that I am never truly alone, and I’ve learned how to enjoy my time while managing the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines.
