**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Written by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Almost a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was on the brink of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being naturally timid and introverted, the prospect of fully immersing myself in this new phase was intimidating. Now, as I reflect on the previous academic year, I recognize it as a time of significant personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment. But what lessons has this year imparted, and what is my current state?
### Making Connections: Conquering the Anxiety
One of the most daunting challenges I encountered was forging friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, it may also be a concern for you. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of the term, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too shy to venture out and meet anyone. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced—friends who feel like family.
What insights did I gain from this situation? I learned that taking that first step is crucial, even if it feels awkward. If you’re not prepared at the outset, that’s completely fine—there are numerous ice-breaker events and chances to connect with others in similar positions. Above all, just be yourself. With such a diverse array of individuals within the course and university, you’re sure to find those who click with you.
### Academic Obstacles: Managing the Workload
Another major challenge was getting accustomed to the workload and the complexity of the material. There is certainly a shift from A-levels, and the transition between the first and second terms felt particularly intense. It’s easy to feel inundated or doubt your capabilities when you see peers studying and appearing to thrive. However, the reality is: everyone is experiencing this together. If you’re struggling with something, it’s likely that others are too.
What is the main takeaway here? Don’t be afraid to seek help. This could be the most vital skill to nurture in your first year. Whether from fellow students or faculty, asking for guidance is essential for your progress.
### Assistance from the Faculty: An Invaluable Asset
On the subject of faculty, the backing from the Materials department is wonderful. The professors and tutors sincerely want to see you succeed and are understanding of the dilemmas students encounter. They maintain open lines of communication with us throughout the year, responding to our concerns.
I didn’t fully utilize the support services until the end of the year, and I regret not doing so earlier. At the beginning of the year, I took a bold move and became a well-being representative for my cohort. This position enabled me to foster connections with staff members, which has proven to be incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with the faculty, and I highly encourage doing so. My primary lesson from this aspect of university life is to fully leverage the support available to you—there’s no such thing as receiving too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts: Cherishing the Experience
In summary, this year has revealed to me that the apprehension I felt before and during university was largely misplaced. With the abundant support from both faculty and fellow students, I’ve realized that I’m never truly isolated. More importantly, I’ve learned how to balance having fun with the unavoidable pressures of exams and deadlines.
