**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, fear, and uncertainty regarding my future. I was about to begin my studies in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a first-year student. Being inherently shy and reserved, stepping into the unknown was not within my comfort level. Reflecting on the year now, I recognize a journey filled with personal development, challenges, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?
### Making Connections: The Initial Major Hurdle
One of the most intimidating elements of starting university was forming friendships. If you’re a future student reading this, you might be concerned about this too. On my inaugural day in student housing, a few days prior to classes starting, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and socialize. Fast forward to the present, and I can affirm that I’ve formed some of the most wonderful friendships I’ve ever experienced. Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, and it all commenced with simple chit-chat with individuals in similar situations.
So, what have I gathered? I discovered that it’s best to take the plunge at the beginning of the year. If you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, fret not! There will be numerous ice-breaking activities and chances to connect with others. And above all, stay true to yourself. With such a diverse array of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to find those who vibe with you.
### Overcoming the Workload and Academic Difficulties
Another major challenge was adapting to the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly an increase from A-levels, and the transition from the first to the second term was even more pronounced. Being in such a setting can sometimes undermine your confidence, particularly when observing peers studying and feeling as though you’re lagging behind. But here’s the reality: everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If something is unclear to you, it’s likely others are in the same position. So, seek help. This is perhaps the most vital lesson I gleaned in my first year—don’t hesitate to reach out to fellow students and staff when you need support.
### Assistance from the Faculty
Speaking of faculty, the professors in the Materials department are extraordinary. They genuinely desire for you to thrive and recognize that students encounter obstacles. Throughout the year, they kept in close contact with us and were consistently available to address our issues. I didn’t fully utilize the available pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier.
At the beginning of the year, I took a bold step by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which turned out to be an invaluable experience. There are numerous avenues to engage with the faculty, and I strongly endorse taking that initiative. My primary takeaway here is to make the most of the support provided—you can never receive too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
In summary, this year has shown me that the apprehension I felt before and during university was mostly unfounded. There are extensive support systems, from faculty to fellow students, that can help alleviate those worries. I’ve realized I’m never isolated, and I’ve also learned how to balance enjoyment with the unavoidable stress of exams and deadlines.
