**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and a sense of the unknown regarding the future. I was about to embark on my journey in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a freshman at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been somewhat introverted, immersing myself in new experiences was unfamiliar territory. Now, reflecting on the last academic year, I recognize a path filled with personal development, obstacles, and a good dose of enjoyment! But what have I truly gained from this experience, and where do I stand today?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Socializing
One of the initial and most intimidating obstacles I encountered was forming friendships. If you’re a prospective student browsing this, you might be feeling the same apprehensions. On my first day of arriving at my accommodations, merely days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day concealed in my room, far too daunted to venture out and meet others. However, as I sit here today, I can affirm that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever known—friends who feel just like a second family.
What did I take away from this? I understood that taking a risk at the beginning of the year is always worthwhile. Even if you’re not feeling prepared or at ease, fret not! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities and chances to connect with others. Most crucially, I learned that embracing your true self is fundamental. With such a diverse group of individuals throughout the program and university, you are sure to encounter others that resonate with your interests and values.
### Meeting the Academic Demands
Another major challenge was adapting to the academic workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a transition from A-levels, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more significant. Being placed in such an intense environment can sometimes undermine your confidence, especially when you observe others studying and feel as though you’re lagging behind.
One thing that guided me through those times was the awareness that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you’re finding something tough to grasp, it’s likely that others are too. The most essential takeaway from my first year was the importance of seeking assistance. Whether it’s from classmates or faculty members, don’t hesitate to ask for support.
### The Value of Staff Support
Speaking of faculty, the professors in the Materials department are phenomenal. They truly want you to excel and understand the obstacles that students encounter. Throughout the academic year, they ensured consistent communication with us and demonstrated empathy towards our concerns. I didn’t fully tap into the pastoral support available to me until late in the year, but I genuinely wish I had earlier.
At the beginning of the year, I took a brave step by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This position allowed me to further connect with the staff, which proved incredibly beneficial. There are many ways to engage with faculty, and doing so is one of the most advantageous actions you can take for yourself. My primary lesson from this experience is to fully utilize the help and support that’s accessible to you—there’s no such thing as excessive support!
### Concluding Thoughts
In summary, this year has illuminated the fact that the apprehensive feelings I experienced before and during university were frequently unfounded. With a broad spectrum of support options available from both faculty and fellow students, I discovered that I was never truly alone. Most importantly, I learned how to harmonize having a good time with the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines.
