**Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with nerves, uncertainty, and a hint of fear regarding what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been somewhat shy and withdrawn, plunging into the unknown was not an experience I relished. Now, reflecting on the past academic year, I view it as a period of significant personal development, challenges, and, most importantly, joy! But what insights have I gained, and what’s my current situation?
### Making Connections: The Initial Major Challenge
One of the most intimidating elements of commencing university was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, it’s possible that you share the same concern. On my first day in student housing, mere days before the term commenced, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, overwhelmed and too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced at Imperial. These bonds have truly become like a second family.
So, what insights did I gain? I recognized that summoning the courage to take that first step—regardless of how daunting it may seem—is always worthwhile. If you’re not prepared to put yourself out there immediately, that’s perfectly fine! There are countless ice-breaking events and chances to mingle with others in similar circumstances. Most importantly, remain authentic to yourself. With such a diverse range of personalities within the course and university, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with you.
### Confronting the Workload
Another considerable challenge was adapting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. There was a distinct leap from A-levels, and an even steeper climb from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a demanding environment can sometimes shake your self-confidence. You might glance around and feel like everyone else is managing better than you. But the reality is: everyone is in the same situation. If something is unclear to you, it’s likely others are grappling with it too.
The solution to navigating this is straightforward: seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson I learned during my first year. Don’t hesitate to reach out to your classmates or the faculty when you’re having difficulty. Everyone is there to support you.
### Assistance from the Faculty
Speaking of support, the staff in the Materials department are exceptional. They truly wish for you to succeed and comprehend the challenges students frequently encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication with us, addressing our concerns and providing guidance. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support available until the year’s conclusion, but I regret not doing so earlier.
At the beginning of the year, I made a bold move by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This role helped me become more familiar with the faculty, which proved to be tremendously beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to connect with faculty, and I strongly encourage taking advantage of them. My biggest takeaway from this experience is to fully utilize the support provided to you. You can never have too much assistance!
### Concluding Reflections
In hindsight, this year has shown me that the anxiety I experienced—both prior to starting university and throughout the year—was mostly unfounded. Numerous support structures exist, from faculty to fellow students, ensuring you’re never truly alone. I’ve learned to balance the pressures of exams and deadlines while also enjoying myself and making the most of university life.
Ultimately, this year has been one of growth, education, and forging connections that I believe will endure a lifetime.
