**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxieties, fears, and uncertainties about what was to come. I was on the brink of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). For someone who had always been introverted and cautious, exploring the unfamiliar felt like a significant challenge. Now, looking back on the academic year, I realize it has been a time of tremendous personal development, obstacles, and unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered was forming new friendships. For many new students, this ranks as one of the major concerns about entering university. I vividly remember my first day in student accommodation, just days before the term officially kicked off. I spent that entire day tucked away in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself.
Fast forward to today, and I can assert with confidence that I’ve forged some of the strongest friendships I’ve ever known. Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family within my course and throughout the university. All it required was stepping beyond my comfort zone and sparking small conversations with others who were also navigating the same situation.
What has this taught me? Taking that first step at the beginning of the year is essential. If you’re not quite ready or feel apprehensive at first, that’s okay—plenty of icebreaker events and chances to connect with peers await. Most importantly, be true to yourself. With such a diverse community at Imperial, you’re sure to meet individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Addressing Academic Obstacles
Another major challenge was adapting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels to university was clear, and the transition from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel daunted or question your abilities while surrounded by high-achieving peers.
What aided me during these trying times was the awareness that everyone shares similar struggles. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, chances are others are too. The key is to reach out for assistance—whether it’s from your classmates or the faculty. This is perhaps the most critical lesson I took away from my first year: don’t hesitate to seek assistance.
### The Outstanding Support from Faculty
Speaking of support, the faculty in the Materials department are remarkable. They genuinely want students to thrive and understand the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open, addressing our worries and providing guidance.
Though I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support available until later in the year, I wish I’d taken advantage of it sooner. At the year’s beginning, I made the decision to become a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to cultivate connections with faculty members, which proved to be invaluable. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university journey. My recommendation? Make the most of the support systems at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance!
### Major Lessons from My First Year
In hindsight, this year has illuminated for me that the anxieties I felt before and during university were frequently unwarranted. With the immense support provided by both faculty and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. I’ve discovered how to balance the pressures of exams and deadlines with moments of happiness and enjoyment.
Ultimately, my first year at Imperial has been a transformative experience. It has taught me the significance of stepping outside of my comfort zone, seeking help, and embracing the opportunities surrounding me.
If you’re poised to embark on your own university adventure, remember that while the path ahead may appear intimidating, it’s also ripe with growth, exploration, and remarkable memories just waiting to be created.
