**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months back, in October 2022, I was inundated with apprehension, dread, and ambiguity regarding the path ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been introverted and reserved, venturing into the unfamiliar was well outside my comfort zone. Now, reflecting on the past academic year, I recognize it has been a time of significant development, hurdles, and memorable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most formidable obstacles I encountered was forging friendships. The onset of university life can be daunting, and if you’re an incoming student reading this, it might rank among your chief concerns as well. On my first day at student accommodation, just a few days prior to the term commencing, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to emerge and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, I can proudly state that I’ve developed some of the most remarkable friendships I’ve ever had—friends who now feel like an extended family.
How did this come to be? It began with casual conversations and engaging with fellow newcomers who were just as apprehensive as I was. My foremost lesson? Take that initiative at the start of the year. Even if you’re not quite ready or comfortable, fret not—there’ll be ample icebreaker events and chances to meet others. And above all, be authentic. With such a diverse array of people in your course and the university, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Adapting to the academic demands and the heightened complexity of university-level material was yet another major challenge. The transition from A-levels to university was striking, and the leap from the first term to the second term felt even more profound. It’s easy to become inundated or question your own capabilities, particularly when observing others study and appear to have everything under control.
What aided me through this was acknowledging that everyone shares the same experience. If you’re grappling with something, it’s likely that others are as well. The crucial point is to seek assistance—whether from your classmates or the faculty. Learning to request support is arguably the most vital skill to cultivate during your first year.
### The Value of Supportive Faculty
Speaking of faculty, the Materials Science department at Imperial is exceptional. The professors and tutors genuinely care about student success and are understanding of the hurdles we encounter. They keep the lines of communication open throughout the year, addressing our worries and providing assistance.
I didn’t fully tap into the available pastoral support until the end of the year, and I regret not doing so sooner. Early in the year, I made the bold move to become a year well-being representative, which helped me forge connections with staff members. This turned out to be invaluable. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and doing so can greatly enhance your university journey. My suggestion? Make the most of the resources and assistance available—you can never receive too much support.
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on this past year has made me realize that much of the anxiety I experienced—both prior to and during my university journey—was often unwarranted. With the extensive range of support options provided by faculty and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. I’ve discovered how to manage stress from exams and deadlines while cherishing moments of happiness, and I’ve matured in ways I never thought possible.
To any incoming students reading this: take the plunge, embrace the challenges that come your way, and don’t hesitate to seek help. University is a journey of transformation, and you’ll emerge more resilient on the other side.
