**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and unpredictability regarding my future. I was about to start my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been introverted, plunging into this new experience felt intimidating. Now, reflecting on an academic year marked by development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment, I can assertively say it has been a life-changing journey. So, what have I discovered, and what is my current state?

### Conquering the Fear of Making Connections

One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered was forming friendships. If you’re a potential student reading this, you might also feel anxious about this aspect of entering university. On my first day settling into my accommodation, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too apprehensive to go out and meet others. Fast forward to now, I’m delighted to share that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had—friends who seem like a second family.

What aided my efforts? Taking that crucial first step. Engaging in conversations with individuals who shared my situation proved to be pivotal. If you’re not quite ready to jump in immediately, don’t stress—there are an abundance of ice-breaker events and chances to engage with others. The key takeaway for me was to be authentically myself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re bound to connect with individuals who align with your interests and principles.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

A further considerable challenge was adapting to the academic load and the amplified difficulty of the material. The leap from A-levels to university was stark, with the transition from the first to the second term feeling even more pronounced. It’s easy to become daunted or question your capabilities when observing others immersed in their studies, leading you to wonder if you measure up.

What carried me through those tough moments was the understanding that I wasn’t isolated in my struggles. Everyone was facing similar difficulties, and if I found something challenging, it’s likely others did as well. The finest advice I can offer? Seek assistance. Whether from peers or your professors, reaching out for guidance is imperative in your inaugural year.

### Cultivating Relationships with Faculty

On the topic of faculty, the Materials department at Imperial is exceptional. The professors and support staff sincerely wish for students to thrive and understand the hurdles we encounter. They keep communication channels open throughout the year, addressing our issues and offering direction.

Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until late in the year, I wish I had engaged with it sooner. Stepping into the position of a year well-being representative was one of the initiatives I undertook at the year’s start, fostering valuable connections with faculty members. Whether through formal roles or informal chats, getting acquainted with the staff is one of the most beneficial actions you can take for yourself. My ultimate lesson? Make the most of the support accessible to you—you can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on this year, I realize that much of the anxiety I experienced—both prior to and during university—was often unnecessary. With the overwhelming support from faculty and peers, I understood that I was never genuinely alone. I also learned how to juggle the pressures of exams and deadlines while still enjoying moments of happiness and fun.

University is a journey of personal development, and while it may initially seem overwhelming, it’s also a chance to uncover your strengths, create lasting friendships, and take on new challenges. If you’re about to embark on your own adventure, remember to take that leap—you may just astonish yourself.
