**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Written by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was brimming with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being someone who has always been somewhat timid and introverted, venturing into the unknown was definitely outside my comfort zone. Now, reflecting on an academic year rich with development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment, I can recognize how impactful this journey has been. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered at the beginning of university was the challenge of making friends. If you’re a future student, this might be one of your primary worries too. On my first day of moving into my accommodation—just a few days prior to the official start of term—I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too anxious to go out and meet others.
Fast forward to now, and I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had. The individuals I’ve met here have become like family, both in my course and throughout the university. All it required was stepping beyond my comfort zone and initiating casual conversations with others who were just as apprehensive as I was.
What did I learn? Taking that first step is essential. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with people. And above all, just be yourself. With such a varied array of people at Imperial, you’re certain to discover those who resonate with your interests and values.
### Addressing the Academic Hurdles
Another major challenge was adapting to the workload and the complexity of the course material. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift from the first to the second term was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel daunted or question your capabilities when observing others studying and appearing to thrive.
What assisted me in navigating this was the reminder that everyone is facing similar challenges. If you find something confusing, it’s likely that others do as well. The vital thing is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. Learning to request help is arguably the most crucial skill to cultivate during your first year.
### The Importance of Supportive Faculty
Speaking of support, the faculty in the Materials department has been remarkable. They truly want students to thrive and are understanding of the obstacles we face. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open with us and were always prepared to respond to our concerns.
Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until the latter part of the year, I regret not doing so earlier. Assuming the role of a year well-being representative was one of the proactive steps I took early on, and it turned out to be a wonderful decision. It allowed me to forge connections with faculty members, which turned out to be invaluable. There are many means to engage with staff, and doing so can greatly enhance your university experience. My key takeaway? Make the most of the support provided—you can never have an excess of help!
### Insights Gained
In summary, this year has revealed to me that the anxiety I felt prior to starting university—and even throughout the year—was often unwarranted. With the abundant support available from both faculty and peers, I was never truly alone. I’ve learned how to navigate the stress of exams and deadlines alongside moments of joy and fun.
Looking back, I recognize how much I’ve developed, not only academically but also personally. Beginning university may seem intimidating, but it’s also an extraordinary chance to learn, connect, and thrive.
