**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about the future. I was about to embark on my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Venturing into the unknown was not an experience my previously shy and introverted self was familiar with. Now, reflecting on an academic year brimming with development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment, I recognize how much I’ve absorbed and how far I’ve advanced.
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most intimidating challenges I encountered was forging friendships. For countless incoming students, this can be one of the greatest apprehensions surrounding the start of university. I vividly recall my first day moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the official beginning of term. I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, far too daunted to venture out and introduce myself to others.
Now, looking at the present, I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever known. The individuals I’ve encountered here—both within my course and throughout the university—have become akin to a second family for me. All it required was stepping outside my comfort zone and initiating brief conversations with others who were feeling just as uncertain as I was.
What did I discover? That initial step at the beginning of the year is always valuable. If you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret—there are countless icebreaker events and chances to meet new people. Above all, I learned to embrace my true self. With such a varied community at university, you are sure to encounter others who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Adapting to the Academic Challenges
Another major obstacle was adjusting to the academic workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was significant, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel overloaded or question your capability when observing others studying and presuming they are ahead of you.
What assisted me in navigating this was the understanding that everyone faces similar challenges. If you’re struggling with a concept, it’s likely that others are encountering the same issue. The key lies in requesting assistance—whether from classmates or instructors. Learning to seek help is arguably the most essential skill to foster in your first year.
### Assistance from Faculty and Pastoral Services
Speaking of assistance, the faculty within the Materials department are remarkable. They genuinely care about student success and are understanding of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept an open line of communication with us, addressing our needs and providing guidance.
While I didn’t fully take advantage of the available pastoral support until later in the year, I regret not doing so earlier. Initially, I took a brave step by becoming a well-being representative for my year, which allowed me to cultivate relationships with faculty members. This experience proved to be invaluable. There are numerous avenues to connect with faculty, and establishing those connections can greatly enhance your university journey.
My most significant insight? Make the most of the support systems at your disposal. Be it academic assistance, pastoral care, or simply guidance, you can never have excess support.
### Insights Gained
Looking back, this year has revealed to me that the apprehension I experienced—both prior to starting university and throughout my first year—was frequently misplaced. With the extensive array of support options provided by faculty and peers, I came to realize I was not truly alone.
More importantly, I learned how to balance the stress stemming from exams and deadlines with moments of happiness and enjoyment. University represents a period of development, and while challenges are inevitable, they also present opportunities to learn and flourish.
As I progress forward, I am thankful for the experiences and lessons from my first year. To anyone about to begin their own university adventure: take the plunge, remain authentic, and don’t hesitate to seek assistance. You’re capable of achieving great things!
