**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
A decade ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and ambiguity regarding what lay ahead. I was about to start my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and reserved, immersing myself in such a new and alien atmosphere was intimidating. Now, as I reflect on the past academic year, I recognize a time of significant personal development, trials, and a lot of enjoyment. But what insights have I gained, and where do I stand today?
### Forming Connections: Conquering the Initial Hurdle
One of the most daunting challenges I encountered at the onset of university was forging friendships. For many new students, this is a major source of worry. On my first day settling into my accommodation, just days prior to the semester starting, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all kicked off with a little casual conversation with others in the same situation as me.
What lesson did I take away? I realized that making that first move at the start of the year is vital. If you’re not quite prepared or at ease, that’s okay! There are plenty of ice-breaker activities and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, I discovered that being authentic is the best strategy. With such a varied mix of individuals across the course and university, you’re likely to find those who connect with you.
### Managing the Academic Demands
Another major hurdle was adjusting to the academic demands and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels was quite noticeable, and the leap from the first term to the second was even greater. Being thrust into such a rigorous academic setting can occasionally undermine your self-assurance. You might observe others studying and feel inferior. But the reality is: everyone shares this experience. If you don’t grasp something, there’s a good chance your peers are struggling with it as well.
The main lesson here? Don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial ability to cultivate in your first year. Whether it’s from classmates or faculty, reaching out for help is imperative.
### The Value of Support from Faculty
Speaking of faculty, the professors in the Materials Science department are remarkable. They sincerely wish to see you succeed and comprehend the hurdles students encounter. Throughout the year, they kept up steady communication with us, addressing our worries and providing support. I didn’t fully utilize the available pastoral resources until the year’s end, and I regret not doing so earlier.
At the year’s start, I took a bold step by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to connect better with the staff, which was invaluable. Numerous avenues exist to engage with the faculty, and it’s one of the best actions you can take for your benefit. My key takeaway from this experience is to fully leverage the aid that’s available to you. You can never have an excess of support!
### Concluding Reflections
In retrospect, this year has shown me that the anxiety I experienced prior to and during university was mostly unwarranted. There are numerous support systems accessible, from faculty to fellow students, to help you navigate challenges. Most importantly, I’ve come to understand that I am never alone. Additionally, I’ve learned how to strike a balance between having fun and coping with the unavoidable pressures of exams and deadlines.
