**Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and doubts about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been introverted and reserved, delving into the unfamiliar was intimidating. Now, reflecting on this academic year, I recognize it as a time of significant personal development, obstacles, and enjoyable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most daunting challenges I encountered was forging friendships. If you are a prospective student, this concern might resonate with you as well. On my inaugural day settling into student housing, just days before classes commenced, I spent the entire time sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I’ve developed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, sparked by casual conversations with peers in similar circumstances.
What was my takeaway? It’s essential to take that courageous step at the beginning of the year. Even if you feel unprepared, fret not—there will be numerous ice-breaking opportunities and events designed to foster connections. Above all, stay true to yourself. With the wide array of individuals across the course and the university, you’re sure to find those who connect with you.
### Navigating the Academic Demands
Another significant challenge was adapting to the rigorous workload and the complexity of the subject matter. There was undoubtedly a clear increase from A-levels, and an even steeper jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can shake your self-assurance, especially when you observe others studying and feel inadequate in comparison.
What assisted me in overcoming this hurdle was the awareness that we are all experiencing similar challenges. If you find something perplexing, there’s a good chance others do too. Therefore, seek assistance. This insight stands as one of the most vital lessons I gleaned in my first year—never hesitate to reach out to your peers and faculty for support.
### Assistance from the Faculty
Speaking of faculty, the team in the Materials department is exceptional. They truly want to see you thrive and are attuned to the challenges students encounter. They maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the academic year, addressing our concerns. I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner.
At the year’s outset, I made a bold move by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position allowed me to build better relationships with the staff, which has been invaluable. There are countless ways to engage with the faculty, and this is one of the best decisions you can make for yourself. My main takeaway here is to maximize the resources available to you—there’s no such thing as too much support!
### Conclusion
In summary, this year has shown me that the apprehension I felt, both prior to and during my university experience, was largely misplaced. With the abundance of support from both faculty and fellow students, I’ve realized that I’m never genuinely alone. More importantly, I’ve learned how to enjoy my time while managing the unavoidable pressures of exams and deadlines.
