**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Approximately ten months ago, back in October 2022, I was engulfed in a mix of nerves, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding the journey ahead. I was on the brink of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being naturally shy and reserved, I was not used to stepping into the unknown. Now, as I reflect on this past academic year, I recognize it as a time of significant personal development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment. But what exactly have I gained from this year, and what’s my current standing?

### Building Friendships: Conquering the Initial Challenge

One of the most intimidating hurdles I encountered was establishing friendships. If you are a prospective student reading this, you may share similar feelings of anxiety. On my first day move-in, a few days shy of the term’s official start, I spent my whole day sequestered in my room, too fearful to step out and make introductions. Looking at my situation today, I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever had. Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, which all commenced with casual conversations with others who felt just as anxious as I did.

So, what key lesson did I learn? I discovered that taking a leap at the year’s onset is always worthwhile. If you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, fear not—numerous ice-breaker events and possibilities to connect with others will arise. Most crucially, I realized that being genuine is the best approach. With a diverse array of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with you.

### Managing the Workload: A Challenging Learning Curve

Another key challenge was adapting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a marked increase from A-levels, and an even more substantial leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a rigorous academic setting can sometimes undermine your confidence. You may glance around and feel as though everyone else has everything together, but believe me, they do not. Everyone is navigating similar waters.

A vital lesson I learned was the importance of seeking assistance. If you find something perplexing, it’s likely that others do as well. Reaching out to peers and staff is essential, especially during your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help—it’s available for a purpose.

### Assistance from the Staff: An Invaluable Asset

Speaking of assistance, I cannot stress enough how remarkable the staff in the Materials department are. They genuinely desire for you to thrive and are fully cognizant of the challenges students encounter. Throughout the year, they kept open lines of communication, providing both empathy and advice. I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, and I wish I had utilized it sooner.

At the year’s outset, I took a proactive step by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to forge closer ties with the staff, which has been immensely beneficial. There are countless avenues to engage with the staff, and fostering these connections can significantly enhance your university experience. My foremost takeaway from this? Make the most of the support that’s available—you can never receive too much help!

### Concluding Thoughts: Embracing the Journey

In summary, this year has shown me that the anxiety I experienced before commencing university—and even throughout the year—was often unwarranted. There are numerous support mechanisms in place, spanning from staff to fellow students, that can help alleviate those fears. I have realized that I am never truly by myself, and I have learned how to harmoniously balance enjoyment with the unavoidable pressures of exams and deadlines.

As I ponder my first year, I am thankful for the challenges I encountered and the growth they prompted. I eagerly anticipate what the upcoming years will bring!
