**Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and doubt about what awaited me. I was set to begin my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been introverted and quiet, immersing myself into this new experience felt intimidating. Now, reflecting on this academic year, I recognize a time of significant personal development, challenges, and memorable moments. But what lessons has this year imparted, and where do I find myself now?
### Making Connections: An Intimidating but Fulfilling Endeavor
One of the most anxiety-inducing obstacles I encountered at the onset of university was forming friendships. If you’re a future student reading this, it’s probably an area of concern for you as well. On the first day of moving into my student accommodation, just days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day cooped up in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say I’ve forged some of the strongest friendships I’ve ever known. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all starting with a few casual chats with others who were feeling the same way.
So, what did I glean from this experience? I realized that taking that first step is essential. Even if you’re not feeling prepared or comfortable, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities and chances to connect with new people. Most importantly, I found that being your true self is crucial. With a wide array of individuals in the program and university, you’re bound to encounter those who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Confronting the Academic Challenges
Another major challenge was adapting to the increased workload and complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels was striking, and the leap from the first to the second term was even more pronounced. Being tossed into this new educational setting can occasionally shake your self-assurance, especially when you observe others studying and feel as if you’re lagging behind. However, a key takeaway for me was the realization that everyone grapples with similar challenges. If you’re struggling with a subject, there’s a good chance that others are too. So, don’t be shy about seeking help. This may be the most crucial lesson I took away from my first year—reach out to fellow students and faculty when you need support.
### Assistance from the Materials Department
Speaking of faculty, the support from the Materials department has been phenomenal. The instructors and tutors genuinely want to see you thrive, and they comprehend the challenges faced by students. Throughout the year, they kept communication lines open, addressing any issues we encountered. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support accessible to us until the end of the year, but I regret not doing so earlier.
At the year’s start, I made the decision to become a well-being representative for my cohort. This position helped me connect with the staff more closely, which proved invaluable. There are numerous avenues to foster relationships with faculty members, and I strongly encourage taking advantage of these chances. My biggest insight from this experience is to fully utilize the support system available—there is no such thing as too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
To sum up, this year has shown me that much of the apprehension I felt before and during university was largely unnecessary. With a broad spectrum of support available from both faculty and peers, I learned that I was never isolated. Most significantly, I discovered how to enjoy my time while managing the unavoidable stresses of exams and deadlines.
