**Looking Back on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what awaited me. I was about to begin my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a freshman. For someone who has always been introverted and quiet, launching into this new phase was intimidating. Now, as I reflect on the past academic year, I recognize a journey brimming with personal development, challenges, and plenty of enjoyment. So what lessons has this year imparted, and where do I stand now?

### Forming Friendships: Conquering the Initial Challenge

One of the most anxiety-inducing challenges I encountered was forming friendships. For many incoming students, this is one of the most daunting aspects of beginning university, and if you’re reading this as a potential student, it might be a concern for you as well. On my first day moving into my residence, merely days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too fearful to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly assert that I’ve forged some of the closest friendships I’ve ever experienced here at Imperial. I’ve discovered a second family, and it all kicked off with casual conversations with individuals who shared my feelings.

So, what did I take away from this? I realized that taking that first step at the beginning of the year is always worthwhile. If you feel unprepared or uneasy, fret not—there will be an abundance of ice-breaker activities and chances to connect with others. Most crucially, I discovered that the best approach is to simply be yourself. With such a diverse range of people throughout the course and university, you’re bound to encounter others who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Managing the Academic Load

Another major hurdle was acclimating to the intense workload and the elevated complexity of the material. There was certainly a shift from A-levels, and to some extent, an even larger transition from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a rigorous environment can shake your self-assurance, particularly when you observe others studying and feel like you’re falling short. But here’s the reality: everyone shares that struggle. If you don’t grasp a concept, it’s likely that others are equally puzzled. The secret is to seek assistance. This might be the most vital lesson I acquired in my first year—never hesitate to ask for help from your classmates and teachers.

### Assistance from the Faculty

On the topic of faculty, the professors in the Materials department are fantastic. They genuinely care about your success and recognize the obstacles students face. Throughout the year, they provided consistent communication with us, addressing any problems we encountered. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support that was available until the end of the year, but I wish I had taken more advantage of it earlier.

At the year’s onset, I took the initiative to become a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect more with the faculty, which proved to be incredibly beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to engage with the staff, and I wholeheartedly recommend doing so—it’s one of the best investments you can make for your well-being. My primary takeaway from this experience is to leverage the support that is at your disposal. You can never have too much assistance!

### Concluding Thoughts

Overall, this year has taught me that the apprehension I experienced before and throughout university was mostly baseless. There is a multitude of support available from both faculty and fellow students, and I’ve come to realize that I am never genuinely alone. Most importantly, I’ve figured out how to balance enjoying life with the unavoidable pressure of exams and deadlines.
