**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was enveloped in nerves, fear, and uncertainty about what the future held. I was on the brink of starting my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a freshman. For someone who had consistently been shy and introverted, plunging into this new phase felt daunting. Now, as I ponder the past academic year, I view it as a time of substantial personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
### Making Connections: A Challenging Yet Rewarding Task
One of the most anxiety-inducing challenges I encountered at the start was forging friendships. If you’re an incoming student perusing this, you might share similar feelings of apprehension. On my first day settling into my accommodation, merely a few days ahead of the term start, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to today, and I can proudly assert that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve experienced. Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, and it all began with a little small talk with fellow newcomers.
So, what insights did I gain? I came to understand that taking that first step is essential. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease initially, that’s perfectly fine—there will be numerous opportunities and events to help you interact with others. Most importantly, just be yourself. With such a broad spectrum of individuals across the course and the university, you’re likely to meet those who connect with you.
### Managing the Workload: A Challenging Adjustment
Another major challenge was acclimating to the workload and the complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels was indeed palpable, and the shift from the first term to the second was even sharper. Being immersed in such a rigorous academic setting can sometimes undermine your confidence, particularly when you observe others studying and feel as though you’re lagging.
Nevertheless, one thing that supported me was the realization that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you find something perplexing, chances are others feel the same way. The main takeaway here? Don’t shy away from asking for assistance. This could be the most vital lesson to embrace in your first year. Whether reaching out to peers or staff, seeking help is essential.
### Assistance from Faculty: An Essential Resource
On the topic of faculty, the teaching staff in the Materials department is outstanding. They genuinely wish for your success and comprehend the difficulties students encounter. Throughout the year, they kept the lines of communication open with us, responding to our issues and providing encouragement. I didn’t fully tap into the pastoral support until the year’s conclusion, but I wish I’d done so earlier.
At the year’s outset, I took the initiative to become a well-being representative for my year. This position allowed me to build rapport with the staff, which proved invaluable. There are numerous avenues to foster relationships with faculty, and doing so can significantly enrich your university journey. My recommendation? Make the most of the support at your disposal. You can never receive too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts: Conquering Anxieties and Embracing Campus Life
Reflecting on this year, I’ve learned that the anxiety I experienced—both pre-university and during my time here—was mostly unnecessary. With the abundant support available from faculty and fellow students, those worries can be alleviated. I’ve come to realize that I’m never truly on my own, and I’ve learned how to strike a balance between enjoying life and facing the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines.
