**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was on the brink of starting my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a first-year student at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been somewhat introverted, immersing myself in a new setting seemed intimidating. Now, reflecting on the past academic year, I recognize a journey filled with personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
### Forming Friendships: The First Major Hurdle
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered was the need to forge new friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, chances are this is one of your primary concerns as well. On my inaugural day in student accommodation, right before the term commenced, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to today, and I can proudly assert that I’ve formed some of the best friendships of my life—friends who feel like family. All it required was a bit of casual conversation with individuals who were in the same situation as I was.
So, what have I gleaned? The secret lies in taking that first step. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease right away, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker gatherings and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, remain genuine. With such a diverse range of individuals across the course and university, you are sure to find those who align with your interests and values.
### Navigating the Workload
Another considerable obstacle was adapting to the workload and the complexity of the course material. There was a significant difference compared to A-levels, and an even steeper increase between the first and second terms. Being thrust into such an environment can shake your self-assurance, especially when you observe others studying and feel like you’re lagging. But here’s the truth: everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you’re struggling with something, chances are others are too. So, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This might be the single most crucial lesson I acquired during my first year—seek support from your peers and the faculty.
### The Value of Faculty Support
Speaking of faculty, the lecturers and tutors in the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely wish for your success and are aware of the hurdles students encounter. Throughout the academic year, they maintained open lines of communication with us and were always receptive to our issues. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support available until the year’s end, but I wish I had engaged with it earlier.
At the beginning of the year, I took a chance by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This position enabled me to connect more closely with the staff, which proved to be incredibly beneficial. There are various ways to engage with the academic staff, and establishing these connections can significantly enhance your university journey. My main takeaway? Make the most of the support you have access to—you can never receive too much!
### Concluding Reflections
Looking back, this year has shown me that the anxiety I experienced before and during university was largely misplaced. With the extensive range of support from both faculty and fellow students, those feelings can be addressed. I’ve realized that I’m never truly alone, and I’ve learned how to balance enjoying my time with the unavoidable stress of exams and deadlines.
