**Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the journey ahead. I was about to commence my adventure as a freshman in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had typically been somewhat introverted and reserved, stepping into the unfamiliar was a formidable challenge. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize it as one filled not only with hurdles but also with tremendous personal growth and enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

### Forming Connections: The Initial Major Challenge

One of the most anxiety-inducing facets of beginning university was establishing friendships. If you’re an incoming student perusing this, it’s likely a concern for you as well. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, just a few days ahead of the term start, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever encountered—individuals who feel like an extended family.

So, what’s the takeaway? Embrace that leap at the beginning of the year. Even if you feel unprepared or uneasy, worry not! Numerous ice-breaker activities and opportunities exist to connect with others who share your experience. Most importantly, simply be yourself. With such a varied group of individuals in the course and overall university, you are sure to find those who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Confronting the Workload and Academic Demands

Another major challenge was acclimating to the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undeniably a significant jump from A-levels, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inadequate when observing others study, but keep in mind—everyone is navigating the same waters. If something doesn’t click, it’s likely that others are grappling with it as well.

The most crucial lesson I picked up in my first year is the importance of seeking assistance. Whether from your classmates or the faculty, don’t think twice about reaching out. This straightforward action can transform your academic experience.

### Assistance from the Faculty

On the subject of faculty, the teaching staff in the Materials department is outstanding. They are genuinely invested in your success and fully understand the challenges students encounter. Throughout the academic year, they ensured ongoing communication and were always receptive to discussing our worries. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier.

At the beginning of the year, I took initiative by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This position enabled me to build connections with the staff, which has been immensely beneficial. There are various methods to engage with staff, and I highly encourage you to do so. My most significant lesson from this journey is to capitalize on the support available to you. You can never have too much help!

### Concluding Reflections

In summary, this year has shown me that the apprehension I experienced before and during university was largely misplaced. With the extensive support available from both faculty and fellow students, I’ve come to realize that I’m never truly on my own. More importantly, I’ve learned how to harmonize enjoying my time with the unavoidable pressures of exams and deadlines.
