**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about the journey ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a first-year student. Transitioning into the unknown was not something my formerly shy and reserved self was used to. Now, reflecting on the past year, I can see a rich experience of personal development, challenges, and a considerable amount of enjoyment! But what have I learned during this year, and what is my current standing?

### Forming Friendships: The Initial Major Hurdle

One of the most intimidating obstacles I encountered was making friends. If you’re an incoming student perusing this, it may be a concern for you as well. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the term’s start, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too daunted to step out and introduce myself to others. Fast forward to now, and I can assert that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced here at Imperial. I’ve discovered a second family, and it all began with a few moments of casual conversation with individuals who were in the same situation as I was.

So, what’s the takeaway? I discovered that taking that first courageous step at the year’s beginning is always worthwhile. If you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, fret not! There will be ample ice-breaker events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, I realized that being authentic is crucial. With such a diverse group of individuals throughout the course and university, you are bound to find those who connect with you.

### Navigating the Academic Load and Pressure

Another significant challenge was adapting to the heightened workload and complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such a setting can occasionally undermine your confidence. You might observe others studying and feel inadequate. But here’s the truth: everyone shares that experience. If you struggle to comprehend a topic, I can nearly assure you that others are finding it challenging as well. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance! This might be the most crucial lesson I’ve acquired during my initial year—don’t shy away from asking your peers and the faculty for help.

### The Significance of Faculty Support

Speaking of faculty, the staff within the Materials department are remarkable. They sincerely want you to thrive and are aware of the hurdles students encounter. They empathize with us and maintain consistent communication throughout the year to resolve any concerns. I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support until the year drew to a close, and I wish I had utilized it sooner.

At the year’s commencement, I took a bold step by assuming the role of a well-being representative for my year. This position allowed me to build a rapport with the staff, which has proven invaluable. There are numerous avenues to connect with the faculty, and it’s one of the best choices you can make for yourself. My key insight here is to capitalize on the available support. You can never receive too much assistance!

### Concluding Thoughts

In summary, this year has shown me that the anxiety I experienced before and during university was predominantly unwarranted. Countless support systems are available, from faculty to fellow students, ensuring that you’re never genuinely alone. Most importantly, I’ve learned how to relish my time at university, even amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.
