**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, fear, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was about to begin my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been introverted and reserved, plunging into the university experience seemed like a frightening challenge. Now, reflecting on the previous academic year, I perceive it as a time of personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment. But what did I truly learn this year, and how do I feel now?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends

One of the most daunting challenges I confronted at the beginning of university was forming friendships. If you’re a prospective student reading this, you might be experiencing similar anxiety. On my first day settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to the term kicking off, I found myself spending the entire day locked away in my room, too intimidated to emerge and meet anyone. Fast forward to today, and I can proudly state that I’ve forged some of the strongest friendships I’ve ever experienced. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with some casual conversation with people who were equally apprehensive.

So, what did I discover? The essential step is to make that first move, even if it feels uneasy. If you’re not quite prepared initially, don’t fret—there will be many ice-breakers and events created to facilitate connections. Above all, simply be yourself. With such a diverse crowd throughout the course and university, you’re bound to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Navigating the Academic Demands

Another major challenge was adapting to the academic workload and the complexity of the material. There was a clear transition from A-levels, and an even steeper transition from the first term to the second. Being thrust into this kind of atmosphere can sometimes undermine your confidence, particularly when you observe your peers studying and feel like you’re falling short.

What helped me navigate this was the understanding that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, it’s likely that others are just as puzzled. The most vital lesson I gleaned during my first year was the importance of seeking help—whether it’s from classmates or faculty. Don’t hesitate to reach out!

### The Value of Staff Support

On the topic of staff, I cannot stress enough how incredible the Materials department is. The professors and support personnel genuinely want you to thrive and grasp the challenges students encounter. They keep in constant touch with us throughout the year to address any concerns.

I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had recognized its value sooner. At the year’s outset, I took a courageous step by becoming a year well-being representative, which enabled me to connect more with the staff. Developing relationships with the faculty is among the most beneficial things you can do. My suggestion? Make the most of all the support available to you—you can never receive too much assistance!

### Concluding Thoughts

In conclusion, this year has taught me that the anxious feelings I harbored before and during university were mostly unfounded. With the extensive support from both faculty and fellow students, I realized that I’m never truly alone. I also learned how to strike a balance between enjoying myself and managing the inevitable stress associated with exams and deadlines.
