**Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what the future might bring. I was about to kick off my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As a person who had always been timid and introverted, plunging into this new phase was intimidating. Now, reflecting on an academic year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and loads of enjoyment, I can recognize how much I’ve grown and the progress I’ve made.
### Making Connections: The Initial Major Hurdle
One of the most daunting elements of beginning university was the thought of making new friends. If you’re a prospective student reading this, you may be experiencing similar feelings. On my first day settling into my accommodation a few days prior to the term’s start, I spent the day tucked away in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had—friends who feel like an additional family.
What did I take away from this experience? I understood that making that first move is essential. Even if you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret—there will be an abundance of ice-breaker events and chances to connect with others in comparable situations. Most importantly, I discovered that being authentic is the most effective approach. With such a variety of individuals at university, you’re sure to encounter those who share your passions and morals.
### Confronting the Workload and Academic Demands
Another major challenge was adapting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. There was a clear increase in difficulty from A-levels, and an even more significant leap from the first semester to the second. Being immersed in such a setting can undermine your confidence, particularly when you observe others studying and feel as if you’re lagging behind.
What helped me navigate this was the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If something isn’t clear to you, it’s likely that others are wrestling with it too. The crucial takeaway? Don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may well be the most vital lesson I learned in my first year. Whether it’s from classmates or faculty, asking for help is paramount.
### The Value of Support from Faculty
Speaking of faculty, the teaching staff in the Materials Science department at Imperial are exceptional. They sincerely want their students to thrive and are acutely aware of the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open with us, addressing our worries and providing aid.
I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until the later part of the year, and I regret not doing so earlier. At the year’s start, I took a brave step by becoming a well-being representative, which enabled me to forge connections with staff members. This proved to be an invaluable experience, and I strongly advocate for making an effort to know your professors and tutors. They are there to assist, and you ought to fully utilize the help they provide.
### Concluding Thoughts
In summary, this year has shown me that the anxiety I felt before and during my university journey was mostly misplaced. With the abundance of support available from both faculty and fellow students, I learned that I’m never truly alone. More importantly, I uncovered the way to balance enjoying my university life with handling the unavoidable pressures of exams and deadlines.
